Grey Gladiator Enjoys Retirement

April 27, 2007

Admirals Express, the hulking grey, who became a fan favorite is now spending his days romping around the paddock at Mike Hales' farm in Orillia, Ontario after retiring from the racetrack last season.

The 'Grey Gladiator' is less than a month away from being officially retired as part of the opening weekend at Mohawk Racetrack in Campbellville.

"We're really looking forward to being at Mohawk," says Hales. "I expect there to be a large crowd. I've had all sorts of people asking me about it. Even some people from the community, who aren't racing fans per say, have inquired because they want to come down and see him that night."

Admirals Express has become a bit of a folk hero in his community, but his appeal is far more widespread than the town of Orillia. Hales has even had emails from overseas from people asking about the prolific pacer. He is fully aware of how popular the 'Grey Gladiator' is and plans to showcase him to as many fans as possible over the next couple of years.

"We have had several inquiries from tracks wanting us to take the horse there for a major event," says Hales. "Besides Mohawk, we have plans this summer to take him to Hiawatha for the Slots Cup, Rideau Carleton for the Des Smith, Montreal for their big invitational race and Grand River again this year. Some other tracks have called, but we haven't finalized details yet."

So, how is the 'Grey Gladiator' enjoying retirement? "Well, he's put on a lot of weight," says a sarcastic Hales. "I'd say he's put on at least 300 lbs. since he's stopped racing and probably weighs between 1,300 and 1,400 lbs. right now. He looks great though and we jog him regularly just to keep him in shape. I honestly think he misses the racing aspect and I'm sure when we load him on the trailer to ship to Mohawk that night, he will put his game face on. Overall though he seems really content and happy and will live out the rest of his life here with us."
