Wrenn Scores Career Victory 7,000

August 15, 2007

Peter Wrenn won the 7,000th race of his harness racing career on Wednesday, August 15 at Freehold.

Wrenn became the 20th driver in harness racing history to reach the 7,000-win level on Wednesday when he guided 3-year-old pacer Spellbinder to victory at the Calhoun County Fair in Marshall, Michigan. Spellbinder is owned by the Wrenns, Drew Zehnder and Kim Braeutigam.

“Wherever it happened, I’d be glad to have it; milestones are milestones,” Wrenn said, adding with a laugh, “Maybe the Hambletonian would have been cool, too. But to have it happen here, at a fair, on my wife’s birthday, I think that means quite a bit. She was right there with me.”

Wrenn, 44, was born in Detroit and lives in Swartz Creek, Michigan. He got his first win in 1978 at a fair in Centreville. He established career highs of 427 wins in 1992 and $3.6 million in purses in 1996. So far this season, Wrenn has 409 victories and $1.8 million in earnings. He ranks fourth in wins this year among all drivers in North America.

“I’ve been lucky to have a lot of live drives,” Wrenn said. “I’ve had a lot of good owners and trainers behind me. I’ll take aim for 9,000 now. I’m young enough to go at it; I’m not slowing down.”

Wrenn’s career earnings total $39.6 million. Next on the win list ahead of Wrenn is Hall of Fame driver Carmine Abbatiello, with 7,170.
