Windy City Pace Night now History Driver Dave Magee added the final missing jewel to his sparkling Hall of Fame career when he drove the 4-5 favorite Jereme’s Jet to a 1:52.2 front-stepping neck triumph in Friday night’s $250,000 Windy City Pace at Maywood Park. It was the 52-year-old Wisconsin native’s first Windy City Pace victory in a illustrious career than has spanned four decades with more than 10,500 victories winners that includes over 100 major Chicago circuit stakes winners.
Despite My Boy David having Maywood Park’s coveted one-post, Magee still managed to hustle out Jereme’s Jet hard enough from the three post to get command in the first turn over the even-money second choice. After a quick :26.2 first quarter, Magee was able to back Jereme’s Jet down to a :28.4 second quarter breather. A :28.1 third panel kept the first up Ab’s Beach Boy on Jereme’s Jet’s outside and :29 flat last panel was enough to nail down the colt’s sixth win in 14 season starts.
The pocket horse My Boy David came on in the lane but was a neck short at the wire. Royal Man rallied for the show spot.
“Jereme’s Jet horse is very quick despite his size,” Magee said. “It might have looked easy but it was tough for him to get the lead here tonight. He was very sharp and I give a lot of credit to Tom (Harmer) for having him ready for this race. It was nice to win this race, especially at this point in my career,” said the 52-year-old Green Bay, WI native with over 10,500 career dash winners that include more than 100 major Chicago circuit stake winning drives.
“I was a little worried coming into the lane about My Boy David but Jereme’s Jet was strong all the way to the wire,” added Magee.
The $125,000 winner’s sharer of the purse boosted Jereme’s Jet season earnings to $202,020 and his two year career bankroll now stands at $1,324,196 for Genesis Racing Stable of Plainfield, IL. Street Dancer Adds Cinderella to Portfolio Street Dancer all but wrapped up Illinois Three-Year-Old Pacer of the Year honors with a dominating five length triumph in the $100,000 Cinderella stake for open company three-year-old distaffers. It was season win No. 17 in 23 outings for the talented filly owned by former Illinois governor Jim Edgar and long-time harness racing owners Jim Reynolds, Terry Rathgeber and Ted Lock.
Driver Dale Hiteman floated Street Dancer out at the start and had to race her parked out second over while Monte Carlo Madam took the field to a :27.1 first quarter and a :56.2 half. Hiteman then tipped Street Dancer out in the third turn, took her three-wide on the backside, and she shot past the leaders at the 1:25.2 three-quarter pole.
The Nelson Willis trainee pulled away in the last turn and was on cruise control in the lane, finishing five lengths of the second place filly Mary Artman. Sherrie On Ice held on for third.
“My filly’s trip really wasn’t going the way I had planned,” said Hiteman. “I hadn’t expected to get involved in a speed battle. You really have to get after Street Dancer or she’ll just pull herself up. She likes to race but needs the encouragement at times. She’s come full circle from where she was a year ago. In fact, it was right here at Maywood that she started getting better her last fall.”
Street Dancer’s sophomore season purse earnings have now reached. Earlier she captured the $62,000 Violet (Balmoral), the $50,000 Springfield State Fair Championship and the $180,000 Grandma Ann Final on Super Night at Balmoral. $100,000 Cinderella Pace Maywood Park: Race Seven PP Horse Driver 5 Street Dancer Dale Hiteman 1a Mary Artman Sam Widger 8 Sherrie On Ice Ryan Anderson 4 Join The Party Joshua Sutton 6 Betsy Hall Mike Oosting 2 Monte Carlo Madam Andy Miller 7 Mysterious Dragon Jason Dillander 1 Everybreathutake Dave Magee 3 My Metallica Tim Tetrick :27.1 :56.2 1:25.3 1:54.1
Investor, driven by Andy Miller, led from start to finish with a 1:58.2 clocking in the $110,000 Galt Trot for three-year-old trotters.
Investor Breezes in Galt Trot The Canadian invader Investor had an easy time capturing the $110,000 Galt for second season trotters for driver Andy Miller, leading from start to finish as the even-money choice with a 1:58.2 clocking.
Investor shot out from the rail and grabbed the lead before the first turn in the $110 Galt Trot. The colt was left unchallenged through the first three turns and the outcome really wasn’t in doubt after Investor trotted to a rather slow 1:00.2 half-mile time. Driver Andy Miller let out a notch on the Anthony Montini trained colt on the backstretch and Investor drew off, winning by four and one-half lengths over Man About Town. One Brother took third.
“We got away with a very slow first half and then we took the third quarter at a much faster pace,” said Miller. “At that point I really just let him trot out a little bit so that he could get some distance between himself and the rest of the field.”
“Investor raced at Flamboro (Downs) up in Canada, so he’s used to half-mile racing,” said trainer Montini. “He’s battled some tough horses all this season, so I thought he’d be pretty tough in here against these trotters.”
The Galt was the third consecutive win for Investor and the $55,000 winner’s share of the purse propelled his season earnings to $165,452 for owners Banjo Farms (Boca Raton, FL) and Charalambos Christoforou (Cambellville, ON). $110,000 Galt Trot Maywood Park: Race Nine PP Horse Driver 2 Investor Andy Miller 3 Man About Town Poliseno 6 One Brother Don Harmon 5 Litigator Ryan Anderson 1a Frank The Hands Mike Oosting 4 American Pacific Dave Magee 1 Matchstick Man Ray Schnittker :29.4 1:00.2 1:29.1 1:58.2
The Quiet Mon wins the Abe Lincoln for Jason Dillander
The Quiet Mon Notches Lincoln Effortlessly In the $105,000 Abe Lincoln, the fourth and final added money event on the card, the overwhelming 2-5 public’s choice The Quiet Mon kept his hopes alive as Illinois top pacing freshman by cruising to a one and one-half length win in 1:54.4. Hes a Big Star closed well to be second while a tiring Richess King was third.
A week ago the John Butenschoen trained state-bred pacer took Balmoral Park’s prestigious American National Final as well.
The Quiet Mon was never tested in the Abe Lincoln. The first season pacer had little trouble getting lead and his five challengers, including entrymate Saratoga John, never put up much of a fight. The Quiet Mon will conclude his two-year-old campaign with seven wins and two seconds in nine starts $215,100 in purse earnings.
“Once this colt made the front I was very confident,” Dillander said. “It was just an effortless performance for him.”
“The Quiet Mon was a late foal and a big colt,” trainer Butenschoen noted. “We targeted him for the late races and skipped DuQuoin and Springfield. It’s not often that you have a game plan that works out, but in this case, with this horse, it did work out. It’s all due to him—the horse just does everything we’ve asked him to do and he does it right, with the least amount of effort.”
Over $83,000 was bet for third on the winning Butenschoen entry and that produced a minus show pool of $17,975. There was also a $725 minus place pool as well. $105,000 Abe Lincoln Pace Maywood Park: Race Eleven PP Horse Driver 1 The Quiet Mon Jason Dillander 3 Hes A Big Star Sam Widger 2 Richess King Ryan Anderson 1a Saratoga John Dean Magee 5 Johnny Charisma Mike Oosting 4 Coastal Highway Todd Warren :29.1 :58.2 1:26.3 1:54.2
