Fewer Races Equal Higher Averages at Turfway

March 29, 2010

A reduced racing schedule produced gains in betting averages at Turfway Park in Florence this winter, while overall totals fell.

Turfway’s Jan. 1 to March 28 winter/spring meet raced either three or four days a week rather than its previous five-day schedule.

Daily averages for betting on Turfway races increased 4.2 percent on track – to $118,035 -- and 11.5 percent from all sources, to $2 million. The average bet on Turfway from out of state sources increased 14.1 percent.

The total on-track handle of $5.3 million fell 24.3 percent, while $91.9 million in bets from all sources betting represented a 19.1 percent decrease, as the track ran 435 races over 45 days this year, compared to 619 races over 62 days a year ago.

Average field sizes increased to 8.6 horses a race from 7.9 a year earlier.
