Odds On Racing's

Trainer of the Month
for April 2010

Nat Varty

Nat Varty, a Peterborogouh, Ontario nativge,
started in the horse business at Peterborough’s Kawartha Downs as a caretaker for Pat Hunt and Rick Fife.

He began his career as a caretaker and assistant trainer in the John Burns Stable, and in August, 1999 started his own stable after a three-year stint in New Jersey where he served as head conditioner for the Bill Robinson stable.

Nat also spent eight years training for Robinson in Ontario and while there, Varty was fortunate enough to look after 1997 Pacing Triple Crown winner Western Dreamer. He conditioned Ontario-bred pacing mare Jays Table when she set a world record 1:49.3 mile in the 1998 Breeders Crown at the Meadowlands.  The Firepan moved into the Varty camp prior to the 1999 Metro Pace eliminations and a week later was crowned Metro champion.

He began 2010 with a vengence, campaigning some of the Odds On Racing horses to victories at both Yonkers and The Meadowlands, and looks poised for a one million dollar season if he continued to rack up wins and earnings as quickly as he has the first three months of the new decade.

Nat has consistently ranked among the top five trainers at Woodbine and Mohawk since 2000, and finished third in the 2004 standings, with his stable’s $2.8-million in purse earnings the highest since 2001.

In 2005, Varty starters recorded 31 wins on the Canadian circuit of Woodbine and Mohawk, as the 'Odds' were in Varty's favor, as Odds On Helen, Odds On Beth and Odds On Beth were all multiple winners.   Varty closed out the campaign by hitting a triple – three consecutive wins courtesy of Odds On Helen, Storm Mist and Brooklynagain, the latter taking a win at Kawartha Downs.

Varty had five straight 100+ win local campaigns from 2000-2004.  In  2004, the operation featured a steady supply of top quality conditioned and claiming horses led by the likes of free for all performer Royal Mattjesty.
