Tetrick Keeps on Drivin'

Three words summed up Tim Tetrick’s feelings as he entered the final four months of the year in his pursuit of harness racing’s records for wins and earnings in a season – “I’m beat, man,” he said.

Tetrick entered Tuesday with 825 wins for the year, which put him 49 victories ahead of the pace set by Walter Case Jr. when he won a record 1,077 races in 1998. In addition, Tetrick had $12 million in purses, which placed him $2 million ahead of the pace set by Brian Sears when he won a record $15 million in 2005. To put his performance in perspective, Tetrick could stop driving today and rank fifth in history for both wins and earnings in a year.

“It’s hard to look at now,” Tetrick said. “Everything is happening so fast. I don’t have time to sit back and enjoy it right now.”

Life in the fast lane, just in the past four days, took Tetrick to races in Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ontario, back to Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. Along the way, he won the Breeders Crown Pace with Artistic Fella and the Shady Daisy with Southwind Tempo. He picked up second-place finishes with Thong in the She’s A Great Lady, with Double Dream N in the Breeders Crown Mare Pace, and with Southwind Lynx in the Cane Pace.

“Winning the Breeders Crown was a great highlight, and Tempo is always fun to race,” Tetrick said. “I thought she raced absolutely super.”

Tetrick won 108 races in August, marking the fifth consecutive month he topped 100 victories. His top triumph in August was the Hambletonian Oaks with Danae.
