Jugette Notes... Teague Looking for wins in Jugette & Jug
September 18, 2007
Trainer George Teague was busy on Tuesday morning at the Delaware County Fairgrounds. The 43-year-old conditioner was tending to both his Jugette (Isabella Blue Chip) and Little Brown Jug (Southwind Lynx) starters’ needs.
First, Teague jogged Isabella Blue Chip, who totes a $697,503 bankroll, and comes into her $48,000 Jugette elimination off a 1:54.1 winning clocking in a $54,585 New York Sires Stakes at Batavia Downs.
“This filly is pretty simply, uncomplicated,” the affable Teague noted. “She’s had trouble with her feet all year long -- that’s been her only real problem.”
George Teague prepares to take Southwind Lynx relaxes in his Isabella Blue Chip out for a jog. stall at the Jug barn at Delaware.
At 2, Isabella Blue Chip captured the $435,000 Sweetheart Final and the $439,000 Three Diamonds, among others.
Teague explained that the daughter of Bettor’s Delight was plagued by gravels and pus pockets in her hooves, causing her to miss a great deal of her sophomore campaign.
“It’s taken us a while to get those feet of hers straightened out,” Teague said. “We think we’ve got most of the problems solved. She seems a whole lot more comfortable now.”
Isabella Blue Chip will start from post three in the second of two $48,000 Jugette eliminations Wednesday afternoon at Delaware, and David Miller has been listed to drive. Miller had been her regular pilot in most of her freshman starts and in all but one of her five starts this season.
Trainer George Teague and Southwind Lynx share quiet time in their Jug Barn at Delaware.
Later that morning, Teague could be found in the famed Jug barn, where he was brushing the tail out on $1.2 million earner Southwind Lynx.
“I trained him a little this morning, just to see how he was going to handle the racetrack,” Teague noted. “He seems fine with everything.”
The son of Real Artist has captured two $1 million events this year -- the Art Rooney at Yonkers on June 2 and The Meadowlands Pace on July 14. His top clocking of 1:48.3 came, however, in a $121,000 Oliver Wendell Holmes division on August 4 at The Big M.
“He’s a good feeling horse,” Teague added.
Southwind Lynx’s last start came on September 4 at Freehold, when an uncharacteristic bobble behind the gate saw him finish second to Always A Virgin in the $297,500 Cane Pace. He’s set to go postward in his $76,800 Little Brown Jug elimination on Thursday from post six with Tim Tetrick in the sulky.
“Timmy’s a great kid,” Teague remarked. “He came up in the business like the rest of us -- with family involved, cleaning stalls and working horses. Having family involved in something you love doing makes it all worthwhile.”
