Lonesome Day takes $300,000 Sweetheart Final
August 5, 2005
Let It Ride Stables' Lonesome Day won by two and a half lengths over Knock Yourself Out to capture the $330,000 Sweetheart Final for two-year-old pacing fillies. My Angel Lou was third by four and a half lengths. Lonesome Day, coupled in the wagering with Mythical and All Night Long, paced a lifetime best of 1:53.1 for the mile. The Cambest filly, a sister to $1 million earner Cam Swifty, now has two wins and a second in three lifetime outings. She briefly broke stride in her Sweetheart elimination race, but regained her composure and went on to win.
"Last week she was just getting too aggressive behind the gate," said driver David Miller. " Ross [trainer Ross Croghan] made an equipment change and put earplugs in her and said she shouldn't get beat. She does everything easy."
"She raced very well," said Croghan. "I kind of expected to win tonight after the elims. She looked like the strongest filly going into the final. She didn't get pressured early, which helped a lot."
A $40,000 Tattersalls yearling purchase, Lonesome Day improved her bankroll to $186,676.
