Fields Now Set for Super Night--Saturday, September 18, 2004 Post positions drawn at Balmoral on Tuesday, September 14, 2004
Super Night Eliminations by Kimberly A. Rinker
Su Mac Lad & Lady Ann Reed Eliminations Sunday, September 12, 2004
Trainers Eaton and Miller Score in Colt & Gelding Sophomore Trot Both $15,000 Su Mac Lad elimination heats on Sunday night were won by trainers who had already captured other Super Night elims. Rockome Vic, conditioned by trainer Jim Eaton took his elim in a speedy 1:56 for driver Eric Ledford. Eaton had won the 13th event on Saturday, a heat of the Orange & Blue Colt Pace elims, with the freshman Larry Horse. The duo of Andy and Erv Miller scored in the first Su Mac Lad elim with Grant’s Charger after winning elims in almost every division the previous night.
"This is pretty neat to win another elim," Eaton mused. "And as it turns out, both of these horses were real nut-jobs at one time."
Eaton purchased the son of Valley Victor for $5,200 at the Arthur, Illinois Yearling Sale two autumns ago for himself and partner Phil Langley. The bay gelding had only a qualifying effort as a two-year-old.
"He hit a tendon in that race at two," Eaton remembered. "And it never really filled up or looked that bad, but at the time I just didn’t think he could measure up to the rest of the competition and I thought it best to let him mature, so we stopped with him. And right from the get-go he was very unmanageable and out of control."
"However, his caretaker, Sandra Brown has done wonders with him and now he’s like a pet," Eaton said. "He’s really changed completely. He used to pull really bad on the track and pull pretty hard in a race, but now he’s much more manageable and gets easier to drive with each start. I’m really pleased with the way he’s come around."
Driver Eric Ledford agrees.
"This horse used to refuse to sit in a hole and was basically a one-way horse until the last four starts," Eric said. "Tonight he was a little fresher than I would have liked, but he’s so flawlessly gaited that you’re able to overlook a lot of that. He’s getting easier to control and will let you do things in a race with him now that he never would before."
Andy Miller had guided Grant’s Charger to a first-place clocking of 1:58.4 in the other elimination on Sunday for trainer/brother Erv Miller.
"He won very easily on the front end tonight," Andy said. "Customize came at him late and he responded well to the challenge, and really worked at holding him off. He’s always been a really nice horse, but he’s always had a little bit of soreness that kept him from becoming a great horse. Erv has always been pretty high on him, and he’s a very nice horse to work around and is uncomplicated to drive."
A winner of just over $70,000 this season, the son of Armbro Charger is the second richest trotter in the Su Mac Lad field, behind Customize, who finished second with Dave Magee in the sulky. Poe (Tim Tetrick) was third in the field of seven.

Fox Valley Flan Takes Lady Ann Reed Elimination Fox Valley Flan is another in a long line of Erv Miller-trained trotting fillies who have come into the Lady Ann Reed as the top favorite. Last year Miller had Uncommon Scents who scored as the heavy favorite, while in 2002 Miller’s Fox Valley Diva suffered a stunning defeat as the overwhelming public’s 1-9 choice.
This daughter of Vaporize comes into the Lady Ann Reed Final with 11 wins to her credit in 14 starts this year for owners the Tanah Merah Farms LLC of Springfield, Illinois. This dominating trotting lass has finished off the board in only one start this season after a brilliant freshman campaign that saw her win $156,175 with an 8-2-0 record from 11 starts.
In her Lady Ann Reed elimination, she easily trotted on the outside for most of the mile, only to draw off by nearly ten lengths in the lane. However, at the last moment, a late-flying Tootie Mouse (Richard Schrock) came flying to nearly snag her victory from her.
"I didn’t expect that other horse to come at her that tough, that late," driver Andy Miller said. "She was out from the quarter on, which is fine for her and how she enjoys racing, but that other horse kind of surprised us. When I got after her late, though, she took right off again."
Driven throughout her career by Erv’s younger brother Andy, Fox Valley Flan has raced nearly exclusively in Illinois, with the exception of a trip to Ontario's Woodbine Racetrack for the Elegantimage eliminations. One of her best outings came in the $100,000 American National victory on July 3 at Balmoral.
"She’s been a super filly all year," Andy said. "And she always puts in a good effort. She's a perfect horse to drive in that you can do anything you want with her. She's very well mannered. She always gives a real good honest effort and finishes strong."
Fox Valley Flan has had a spectacular three-year-old campaign, winning eight in a row through August 19, before finishing second behind Housethatruthbuilt in the $119,600 Hudson Trot on August 28 at Hawthorne. One week later she finished second to Silver Springs in the $130,000 Filly World Trotting Derby at DuQuoin, trotting in 1:53 with Andy at the controls.
To date Fox Valley Flan has earned $369,420 with 18 wins and four seconds to her credit in 24 career outings. She is the third foal out of the Speedy Crown mare Yankee Salsa and has a half-brother in SJ’s Tostitos (by SJ’s Photo), a $187,509 winner of 18 races lifetime. She sold for $41,000 at the Walker Standardbred Sale in August of 2001.
In the other Lady Ann Reed elimination Dave Magee piloted longshot Linda Louisiana to a 1:57.3 clocking for trainer David Mulvey. Good And Plenty (Lavern Hostetler) was second, with Sunceraye (Mike Oosting) third, Pixie's Dixie Girl (Tony Morgan) in fourth and Fox Valley Cordial in fifth.

******************************************************** Orange & Blue Filly Pace, Orange & Blue Colt Pace, Langley Memorial & Grandma Ann Eliminations September 12, 2004
A total of 13 elimination races were contested Saturday night at Balmoral Park, and there were a lot of surprises. All the races carried a purse of $15,000.
Team Miller Heads Up Orange & Blue Filly Pace Division The training and driving duo of Erv and Andy Miller have proved to be a successful and formitable combination in the past and this year’s Super Night looks to be no different. Especially in the Orange & Blue Filly Pace, where "Team Miller" nabbed three starting slots off impressive efforts their elimination heats last Saturday.
Fox Valley Zena captured her Orange & Blue Filly pace elimination impressively by nearly nine lengths for Andy in 1:53.2. With seasonal earnings of $58,312 the daughter of Richess Hanover sports a 9-1-1 record from 11 career outings. She bested Whata Bizy Body (Tim Tetrick), Sounds of Silence (Dave Magee) and Barkney Spears (Ryan Anderson) for the win.
"She just kind of coasted along tonight and was very strong," Andy said. "I pulled the ear plugs on her to keep her attention down the lane just for security, but she was very strong and really needed no urging from me."
"She was a $16,000 yearling purchase and I just bought her on looks alone—she was a gorgeous looking mare and still is," Erv recalled. "I think a lot of folks were a little skeptical because it was the first crop from her sire, Richess Hanover, who is a full brother to Rustler Hanover, who was a disappointment as a sire. So, initially I really didn’t focus on her pedigree. She was a little aggressive this spring and we’ve tried to keep her calmed down. She choked and we had the muscles in her throat cut and I think that’s helped to quiet her down a bit because she’s able to get her air easier now."
Prior to her victory here last week Fox Valley Zena scored a 1:52.1 victory at DuQuoin in the $45,000 First Lady. She began her career by winning her first five lifetime starts.
The richest of any Super Night starter this year is the Miller pupil Fox Valley Shaker, who has earned $418,723 in only 13 freshman starts. The daughter of Incredible Finale, who is owned by Vandalay Racing of Ancaster, Ontario finished third in her elim to Time For A Win (Tony Morgan), but was placed second after Harmony Oak Mag was disqualified from second and placed sixth for interference. That moved Shawnee Sherwood (Dale Hiteman) up to third and Fox Valley Bitty (Ron Marsh) up to fourth.
"She was sucking air really bad tonight," Andy noted. "She’s been traveling a lot and could be a bit tired, but I don’t think that’s hurt her that much. We’ll be able to correct the air problem before Super Night."
Fox Valley Shaker has done nothing less as a freshman than win the prestigious $443,200 Sweetheart Final at The Meadowlands on August 6 in 1:53.3. She also won her $55,000 Illinois State Fair Colt Stake at Springfield and most recently finished second to Cabrini Hanover in the $540,617 Great Lady at Woodbine.
Last but definitely not least is Tanah Merah Farms Pandemonious, a winner of $37,784. The Cole Muffler lass finished second to Fox Valley Fussy (Tony Morgan) in her Orange & Blue elimination, pacing in 1:54 for Andy, after spending the summer racing at the county and state fair levels. Fox Valley Fussy nabbed her second win of the year, while Briley Shea (Ron Marsh) was third and Beautiful Somehow (Dave Magee) was fourth.
"This is the first time she’s raced on the limestone and she’s such a tiny mare that she just got out-nodded at the wire," Andy said. "She’s got to work twice as hard as the rest of them but she’s got a giant heart and really tries her guts out."
The small but gutsy filly has one win (at Lincoln, in a $11,972 ICF stake), four seconds and a trio of thirds in nine career starts, and was a $51,000 yearling purchase from the Cottonwood Sale last fall. Her dam, Panfastic is out of the top mare and former Super Night Champion Panic Attack, who won this event in 1991.

Schulfer Heads Up $200,000 Grandma Ann
Trainer Mike Schulfer fulfilled every trainer’s dream of getting a horse in a Super Night event. But Mike did one better—he has two fillies in the Grandma Ann—both winners of their respective eliminations. The amazing thing about these three-year-old distaffs is that it wasn’t long ago that both were racing in the claiming ranks. Canine Candy, a daughter of the Big Dog and Carcaro, a Sportsmaster filly each won their elims in 1:54.2 (Canine Candy with Tim Tetrick) and 1:54.1 (Carcaro with Ryan Anderson). Both fillies have nearly identical owners and both are being driven by two of the youngest drivers on the Windy City circuit. "Canine Candy had a good shot in her elim," Mike said. "She has been getting sharp lately and I thought she fit well with that group. She’s a nice filly and I’m actually surprised that she’s as good as she is. I just hope she can stay this good for tSaturday." Mike claimed Canine Candy on August 4 for owners Louis Buttice, James Skvarla and Nancy Magnus, and since that time she’s earned $9,590 for her new connections in only five starts. She has put together a record of 2-2-2 in 21 starts this year with $13,384 in seasonal earnings. "In her last four starts she’s just been running over horse’s backs and tonight is the first time she was able to get a break and shake loose," Tim Tetrick noted. "She’s really getting sharp at just the right time." Canine Candy bested rival Art's Fiddle, while Free To Fly (Dale Hiteman) nailed down third. Lexus Gram got up for fourth for Tony Morgan. Mike’s other charge, Carcano, is owned by Louis and Robert Buttice, Nancy Magnus and Jack Gelman of Illinois and Florida. Mike claimed the brown filly on July 11 and since then she’s earned $13,860 for her new owners. "This filly is getting better with every start," Ryan Anderson said. "Mike (trainer Schulfer) made a little equipment adjustment and she really stepped up to the plate tonight. She’s a medium-sized filly and you can race her anyway you want." "This filly was racing in the ICF claimers and we really liked her," Mike said. "My owners just love being part of Super night, so for all of them this is a big thrill to have two fillies in, and in the same race." "Canine Candy has more raw speedy than Carcano," Mike noted. "Carcano has a small breathing problem, and if everything is working well in that department, than she’s ok. Both fillies are pretty sound otherwise." Carcano bested Rain Dance Jessica (Shawn Christner) and Nasti Nicki (Del Chupp), while Creative Lass (Andy Miller) finished fourth. In the third and final division of Grandma Ann hopefuls Undeniably You and driver Dave Magee made their seventh trip to the winner's circle this season for trainer Tom Simmons. The daughter of Art's Conquest paced to a 1:52 clocking ahead of Kan Wheel (Tim Tetrick) and Aries Conquest (Andy Miller), while Venturi Effect (Sam Widger) got up for fourth. $200,000 Grandma Ann Pace (Race Six)Post--Horse Driver1. **************************************************** $200,000 Pete Langley MemorialFox Valley Jammin captured the first of three Pete Langley Memorial elims, stopping the timer in 1:52 with Andy Miller at the lines for trainer/brother Erv Miller. "I really didn’t want those fractions and I kind of had to chase him to keep him up on the bit," Andy said. "Everything worked out well for us in here in the end, though." "He was immature at two and wouldn’t sound up, so that’s why we raced him lightly at two," Erv explained. "This year at three we found out he had some back ankle troubles, so we took him the University of Illinois where they were able to help his problems. We took him to some county fairs and he was able to get brave there. He’s really started to come around at the right time." Fox Valley Jammin bested rival Walter Pay A Ton (Eric Ledford) and Wolf Creek Willie (Dave Magee), while Fox Valley Jeeves (Mike Oosting) was fourth. Ryan Anderson piloted Gar to a 1:51.4 clocking in the second elim for trainer Roger Welch. This three-year-old son of the Big Dog easily bested rivals Prince Vince (Mike Oosting) and Live Out Loud (Dale Hiteman) to nail down his fourth win in 20 starts this season. Big Underdog was fourth for Dave Magee. "This horse is really fresh right now and came a very fast last quarter (:25.3) in his last start at Hawthorne when I drove him and he just got beat by a head there," Ryan said. "Tonight I never asked him to pace at all—he did it all on his own. His dam (One Cadet) was the first horse that I ever won a race with, so this is kind of special for me to be driving him." Fox Valley Gallant, a son of Sportsmaster paced to a 1:50.1 lifetime best in the third Langley elim. Crazy Art was second for Pat Berry, while Ron Marsh steered Fox Valley Assault to third and Ryan Anderson got Incredible Journey up for fourth. "This was a great effort from this colt—he’s chased Enemy At The Gate all year long and really deserves this win," Eric said. "He really likes to race first up. The race really went the way I had hoped it would—I wanted to be one-two with Dave (Magee driving Enemy At The Gate), and it worked out really perfect for us."
Fox Valley Gallant took the lead at the :55.3 half and never looked back, winning by three and a half lengths over the hard-trying Crazy Art (Pat Berry). Eric had kept the bay colt just in front of favorite Enemy At The Gate, who didn’t appear to be himself that night and then made an uncharacteristic break in the middle of the stretch, fading to fifth. The time of 1:50.1 was a new life mark for Fox Valley Gallant, who had won an Illinois State Fair Colt Stake elimination at Springfield on August 14 in 1:51.1. This latest victory pushed the colt’s seasonal earnings to $32,005. $200,000 Pete Langley Memorial (Race Thirteen)Post--Horse Driver

*************************************************** $300,000 Orange & Blue Colt PaceAs one of the most wide-open divisons, a series of four Orange & Blue Colt Pace elimination heats were contested at Balmoral Park on Saturday, September 11th. The first two finishers from each race and one third place horse drawn from lot will vie in the final. Taking the first event was Fox Valley Ariat and driver Dale Hiteman in 1:54. Tommy's King (Tony Morgan) was second, while Demack's Quick (Dave Magee) was third. "This is a nice-bred colt who was super tonight," Dale noted. "He certainly moved up the ladder with this win and is perfect-mannered and a great horse to drive. He should be one of the overwhelming favorites in the final." In the second elim Dave Magee piloted Cheyenne Bodie to victory for the Wilson Racing Stable and David Yohe of Illinois and Ohio. The Ft. Apache Hanover colt paced to a winning, new lifetime mark of 1:53. "They've brought this colt along really slow and avoided some of the tougher races that these other youngsters have been racing in all season, such as DuQuoin and Springfield," Magee said. "He’s a super horse to drive and is very sensible." Perdition and Andy Miller nailed down second, while Fox Valley Rumble was third for Dale Hiteman. The third Orange & Blue Colt Pace elim saw Team Hutch win for Eric Ledford in 1:53 after favorite Chevie Cash (Dale Hiteman) made a break and was disqualified from second to ninth after it was deemed he caused interference to his rivals. Kennan's Josh (Tim Tetrick, finished third but was placed second, while New World Mover (Andy Miller) finished fourth and was moved up to third. "This horse has been deceptively good all year long," Eric noted. "He’s never raced poorly, but his true talents haven’t come out yet. He has a lot of natural speed and ability—it just seems like in every final he’s had bad racing luck. He was locked in at Springfield and parked first over at DuQuoin. Tonight he finally got a break." In the fourth and final elim longshot Larry Horse scored in 1:53.2 for Eric Ledford. In only his sixth career start, the often cantankerous son of Sportsmaster bested rivals Brian And Kellie (Tim Tetrick) and Iron Courage (Randy Jacobs) for just his second career victory. "He’s not a very bright horse, but he’s got a ton of talent and he’s very immature mentally," Eric said. He doesn’t know what to do and will just do stupid stuff on the track. But he’s got gait and talent and will mature into a very talented horse someday. We definitely won’t see his full potential this year." $300,000 Orange & Blue Colt Pace (Race Fourteen)Post--Horse Driver2. Demack's Quick Magee 3. Perdition Miller 1. Larry Horse Marsh 4. ***************************************************** The Dan Patch & Ann Vonian Eliminations
September 9, 2004 The elimnations for Super Night began on Thursday, September 9 on Balmoral's opening for their 2004 Fall meeting. A pair of $15,000 Ann Vonian eliminations were held for ICF aged fillies and mares, while a trio of $15,000 Dan Patch eliminations were contested for ICF aged colt and gelding pacers. In the first of the two Ann Vonian elims, Sportstalk and driver Dale Hiteman scored in 1:53.2 for trainer Tim Pinske and owner the Pinske Stables of Plato, Minnesota. It was the third win of the year in seven starts of the daughter of Sportsmaster, who was also bred by the Pinske Stables. To date she's earned $59,000 with a lifetime best of 1:51.2, taken earlier in the year at Balmoral Park. She was followed up by Sporty Cam (Mike Oosting), Jessie The Cowgirl (Dave Magee), Grande Hope (Tony Morgan) and Fox Valley Ladydoc (Ron Marsh). Sportstalk won by a head over Sporty Cam, after favored Lou Annie was scratched sick. In the second Ann Vonian elim Parklane Powerful took her fifth victory of the season for driver Ronnie Marsh and trainer Homer Hochstetler. Owned by the Fighting Major Stable of Illinois, the five-year-old daughter of Sportsmaster scored in a new track record time and personal best time of 1:49.3. Parklane Powerful has over half a million in career earnings and has $129,890 in seasonal earnings for her connections. Loyal Opposition (Andy Miller) finished second, while Cha Cha Ching (Eric Ledford) was third, with Neat Nicole (Mike Oosting) fourth and Renee's Queen (Dave Magee) fifth. The first five finishers in each of the Ann Vonian eliminations will return for the $125,000 Ann Vonian Final on Super Night, September 18. Winning the first Dan Patch elimination in 1:50.1 was Only Choice and driver Ronnie Marsh, who bested favorite Taser Gun (Andy Miller) by a head. Trained by Homer Hochstetler for Open Outcry Harness LLC and No Cry Harness LLC of Woodale, Illinois, it was the sixth win of othe season for the Cole Muffler four-year-old gelding. Finishing third was Dashing Diplomat (Tim Tetrick). In a seeming repeat of the first elimination, the connections of Only Choice watched as that horse's stablemate took the second Dan Patch elimination in 1:50.3. My Buddy Bob and driver Ron Marsh bested rivals Sports Fantasy (Eric Ledford) and Honest Lawyer (Ryan Anderson) who also earned starting berths in the rich final. My Buddy Bob is also trained by Homer Hochstetler for Open Outcry Harness LLC and No Cry Harness LLC of Woodale, Illinois. The Cole Muffler gelding now sports a 4-1-7 record from 26 seasonal starts, and has just over $118,000 in career earnings. Constant Change took the third Dan Patch elimination easily in 1:51, and was never headed throughout the miel for driver Dave Magee, using a modest :28 final quarter to pace home one and a half lengths ahead of rivals Randolph Duke (Andy Miller) and Hot Rob (Del Chupp). It was the eighth win of the season in 20 tries for the six-year-old son of Cole Muffler, who is trained by Tom Simmons for Benita Simmons, Hunt Harness Horses Inc., and Helen Logan of Illinois and Kansas. Constant Change has $407,612 in career earnings to date.
