Upset in Senior Trendsetter Final Sunday

March 5, 2006

Austin’s Best put on a gutsy performance to win the $72,000 Senior Trendsetter on Sunday afternoon at the Meadowlands. Even more impressive was that he lit up the tote board with a $117.80 payoff.

Despite a well-rated victory in last week’s second leg of the Senior Trendsetter, Austin’s Best was sent off at 57-1 in the final. Driven by Yannick Gingras, Austin’s Best was parked to the half in 55.4 seconds and remained wide nearly the whole mile. He finally saw the rail in deep-stretch, tucking behind the leader Cut Loose Hanover. As Cut Loose Hanover began drifting out, Austin’s Best closed quickly up the pylons to best him by a length and a quarter in 1:51.4.

It was three and a quarter lengths back to Marti’s Arti in third. John Drew, the 8-5 favorite, finished sixth. Austin’s Best, a four-year-old Cambest gelding, notched his fourth win in seven starts this season for trainer Bruce Saunders and owner Cary Potkin of Harrison, New York.
