More Racing at Springfield?
February 12, 2008
Late last year, Rep. Raymond Poe, R-Springfield, floated the idea of staging harness racing, with associated wagering, at the Illinois State Fairgrounds beyond the 10-day run of the state fair itself.
Poe has introduced House Bill 4758, which would create the Illinois State Fairgrounds Racetrack Authority. It would bring horse racing to the fairgrounds for a three- to nine-month period each year. The Department of Agriculture contracts with Chicago’s Maywood and Balmoral to stage racing and handle wagering during the fair. Poe said many details remain to be worked out, including how revenue from the racing will be split.
