Southwind Tempo Takes Betsy Ross
April 27, 2008
Southwind Tempo bounced back from a loss at Dover with a convincing win in Sunday's $250,000 Betsy Ross final at Harrah's Chester Downs.
Driver John Campbell put Southwind Tempo on the point from post position one and they would lead the field of top distaffers through a quarter in 26.2 and a half in 55.4. Shortly after the half, driver Brian Sears and My Little Dragon, who defeated Southwind Tempo at Dover in the first round of The Classic Series, tried it first-over, but she couldn't get up to Southwind Tempo, who was still on the lead at the 1:23.2 three-quarter mark. In the stretch, Southwind Tempo kicked it into another gear and pulled away from both pocket-sitter Darlins Delight (Yannick Gingras) and My Little Dragon. In the end, Southwind Tempo won by open lengths in a final time of 1:50.2.
My L:ttle Dragon survived the rough trip to nose out Darlins Delight to finish second. Kevin Lare trains Southwind Tempo, a four-year old Bettors Delight mare, for owner Jerry Silva of New York. This was her fifth trip to victory lane this season, and last year's Dan Patch Award winner for Three-Year Old Filly Pacer now has earnings in excess of $1.1 million in her career.
