Burning Point Wins Roses Are Red at Mohawk

July 1, 2006

Burning Point triumphed in the $387,250 Roses Are Red Stakes final – the richest installment in the race's 27-year history at Mohawk. Pierce got away third in the early going with the six-year-old daughter of Camluck--Tour De France, who brushed her way the lead shortly after the :26.4 opening quarter. Once in command, Burning Point tripped fractions of :55.4 and 1:24 before kicking home in 28-seconds for the 1:52 decision.

"She seems to be the type of mare that gets better as the year goes on," said winning driver Ron Pierce. "She gets better as the weather gets warmer. She definitely is a great mare. It's an honor to win this race. Roses Are Red was a great mare and it is special to win a race named in her honor."

Burning Point improved her 2006 record to 3-3-9 in 16 starts for Steve Elliott, who trains the career winner of $2,577,690 for the Cuzzins Stable of Delray Beach, Florida. Jack & Alice Kopas along with their son, John, were on hand to make the trophy presentation to the winning connections of Burning Point. All three of them have fond memories of the series namesake.

"Roses Are Red had determination and toughness," said John Kopas. "We only raced her as a two and three-year-old. She was a lot like Burning Point, she showed up every week. If she was around in today's era, she would be making a pile of money. As a three-year-old at Delaware, she broke six records in one afternoon".
