Red Bow Tie Passes

May 30, 2005

1998 Pacer of the Year Red Bow Tie was euthanized on May 29, 2005, according to a report from the Woodbine Entertainment Group. Red Bow Tie, who retired in 2002 with 59 wins, 18 seconds and 16 thirds from 136 starts and earnings of $2,673,920, was diagnosed with the neurological disease equine protozoal myeloencephalitis [EPM].

"He was in intensive care since last Monday," said driver Luc Ouellette, on whose farm in Ontario the 11-year-old gelding lived in retirement. "We did everything we could for him, but he lost the use of his hind legs. He was a very special horse to our family as he was on the racetrack. We're very grateful to have had him for as long as we did."
