Rainbow Blue Keeps On Truckin'

June 12, 2005

On June 4, Rainbow Blue coasted to victory in the second leg of the Classic Distaff at Woodbine, pacing her fourth sub-1:50 mile. Her 1:49.2 performance was just the latest in a long list of accomplishments for the four-year-old mare who was named Horse of the
Year in 2004, winning 20 of her 21 starts last year. She has now won 30 of 32 lifetime.

"She does it easier than any other horse I've seen do it," said co-owner and trainer George Teague Jr. "She continues to amaze me, and I know how good she is. I think she's better than last year-a little bigger, wider, stronger, a little faster, a little better."

That should be enough to scare off the competition but 12 mares were entered for the $215,000 Lady Liberty on June 17 at the Meadowlands. Rainbow Blue's career has been nearly flawless, banking $1,428,934 for Teague; his sister, Brenda Teague, and K&R Racing LLC, all of Houston, Delaware. Her only losses were at the Meadowlands in the $150,000 New Jersey Sire Stakes Final in 2003 and the Mistletoe Shalee Final last August.
This year Rainbow Blue has won all four of her starts.

"I have to give a lot of the credit to Dr. Ken Seeber," Teague noted. "He's not only done most of the vet work I've needed on her, which isn't much, but has given me a lot of good advice. He told me, in my long-term interests, to space out some of her racing and pick my spots. I want to race her for a couple of years, and I think this is the best strategy. Going into that mile in the Classic, I trained her one mile in 2:13. She doesn't need a whole lot of work and knows what to do once she gets out there. She's beyond legit. I am just part of a good thing."

The good thing began when she was purchased for $10,500 as a yearling. Rainbow Blue's stakes opportunities at the Meadowlands include not only the Lady Liberty but also the $85,000 third leg [July 23] and $250,000 final [July 30] of the Classic Series and the $175,000 estimated Golden Girls [August 6].
