Under her direction the former Hall of Fame of the Trotter became one of the most technologically advanced Hall of Fame in the country and even includes a 3-D race simulator. Her vision and tireless work ethic has continued to improve the Harness Racing Museum, with new exhibits added each year.
Among them have been the acquisition and display of the extensive Castleton Farms collection, the personal retrieval of the historic Roosevelt Raceway collection from a dumpster on Long Island and a complete collection of the colors of Hambletonian-winning drivers.
Cunard was also instrumental in acquiring for the Harness Racing Museum the most extensive collection of horse-themed Currier & Ives prints in the world. Later she had the idea to create a traveling exhibit of some of the highlights of this collection. This exhibit, which tells the story of harness racing, has now been seen by more than half a million people in North America and Europe.
She was also the driving force behind the "Drive To Win" exhibit, which also travels for free and showcases the hard-working, but not often honored, heroes of racing. In addition to envisioning and developing exhibits for the museum, she has worked to improve and add to the historic collections of the museum, including volumes for the Peter D. Haughton Memorial Library.
She has been instrumental in making sure the museum has thorough records of historic happenings. Cunard also oversees all the functions of the museum, including the financial health of the operation and the annual Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. Her years of devotion to the museum have made it a showpiece for the sport of harness racing.
Over the years several renovations allowed for more effective use of the Museum’s available space. Additions included the Currier & Ives Gallery, The William R. Haughton Memorial Hall, The Historic Clubhouse, The Peter D. Haughton Memorial Library and Hall of Immortals. A climate-controlled storage facility for the Museum's collection and an elevator was also added.
In 1996 a $6 million major capital campaign was launched to renovate and expand the Museum and augment the Museum’s Endowment Fund. That is when its name became The Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame. The Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame is dedicated to comprehensive, active and authoritative support and promotion of the Standardbred industry through documentation and preservation of the history and traditions of this American-born sport. It will also continue to augment existing collections and provide extensive research, educational programming and exciting exhibitry to expand harness racing's interest and appeal, both nationally and internationally, to assure an informed audience and a successful future.
Under the watchful eye of Gail Cunard, the Museum has many interactive exhibits as well as a crowd-pleasing race simulator. Since their inception, these three exhibits have traveled to 63 venues worldwide and have been seen by an audience of over 532,000 people.
