Joe & JoAnn Thomson had a vision, and saw it come to fruition in 1991, with the creation of their Winbak Farms. They devised the name Winbak from combining the name of the original farm's name (Winfield--at one time home of the legendary Thoroughbred Northern Dancer in Maryland) with the first initials of their children's names: Bradley, Ashlee & Kimberly (BAK)!
The couple began their operation on a 2,000+acre farm in Chesapeak City, Maryland and have since expanded to inculde six breeding jurisdictions: Canada, New York, Maryland, Delaware, Maine and Pennsylvania.
Both Joe and JoAnn--as well as the rest of their family--are well known for their passion for their horses, and as a result, they have been honored as Breeders of the Year on several occasions. In 2007, the Winbak conglomerate had produced the winners of 1,772 winners who earned $19,616,998---second among all breeders in North America.
An aereal view of Winbak's New York farm
Their stallions have been hailed as some of the best in harness racing. Their New York farm roster reads like a "who's who" of racing, and is home to Artiscape, Sand Vic, CR Excalibur, Dream Away, Giant Hit, Malabar Man, Plesac, Riverboat King, Totally Western and Village Jove. Just across the border in Canada, you'll find Angus Hall, Armbro Deuce, Camotion, HP Paque, E Dees Cam, Holy Guacamolie, Island Fantasy, Mutineer, Royal Mattjesty and Rustler Hanover.
As well, both Bilssfull Hall and Quick Pulse Mindale reside at their Pennsylvannia facility, while CR Kinetic can be found at their Florida farm and Veeza at their Maine operation. In Maryland Bonnie And Clyde, JK Outlaw, and Tejano are resident stallions, with Badlands Hanover, Powerful Toy, Shotgun Scott, Three Olives, Three Wizards, CR Commando, Crown Prince Gar, Political Briefing and Roddy's Bags Again hailing from their nearby Delaware farm.
Roddy's Bags Again p, 1:48.4 ($705,175) joined Winbak's other Delaware stallions for the 2008 season, becoming the fastest and one of the richest stallions ever to stand in Delaware. A top juvenile winner and elite class older pacer at four and five, Roddy's Bags Again earned a 1:54.3 record at two. He then lowered that mark to 1:50.2 at three. He won in 1:50.2 at four and lowered his record to 1:48.4 at five.
In May 2007, the Thomsons announced they had hired Ohio native trainer-driver Jeff Fout to take over the training of their young stock.
Through March 1, 2008, Winbak Farm has produced 396 starters, 144 winners with 211 wins, earning $1,874,368.
