Notes from Around The Ovals
April 5, 2007
Jim Campbell, 45, goes back to training horses after a hiatus as owner-operator of a New Jersey pizzeria. Campbell has already built up a stable of 11 horses at White Birch Farm in Allentown, N.J.
Flamboro Downs will be closing its backstretch stabling and apartment facilities. The track has offered to rent the facilities to the Ontario Harness Horse Association, which represents the track's horse people, for $1 per year, to enable OHHA to maintain the facilities if it wished to do so. As that offer has been rejected by OHHA, Flamboro Downs proposes to proceed with the planned closure, effective May 31, 2007.
Seventy-nine horses remain on the nominees list for the 24th edition of the $1.5-million Pepsi North America Cup after the March 15 sustaining payment deadline. The country’s most prominent Standardbred race will be contested at Mohawk on Saturday, June 16. It is the first time the Campbellville track will host the event. The 2006 race saw 71 horses kept eligible following the mid-March deadline.
