Oval Notes
April 14, 2007
In the Irons established himself as one of Woodbine's top 3-year-olds with a 2 3/4-length victory in the $59,800C final of the Youthful Pacing Series Friday night. Phil Hudon drove the son of Mach Three to a lifetime-best 1:51.2 win for trainer Randy Hill, who owns a piece of the bay colt with Mike Davis and Leslie Davis.
Radio City was second, but no match for In the Irons, who now has wins in three straight, including the Apaches Fame final last month. Tell All was third.
"He's a real nice horse," Hudon said. "When you get him to the front, he doesn't like to let them by. I was able to shut him down over the last few steps. I believe he's got plenty of speed left. He's done everything asked of him so far. It's nice to drive horses that like to go forward."
Bunny Lake p,2,1:54, 3,1:51, 1:49 ($2,843,476) foaled her first baby, a colt by Rocknroll Hanover on April 13 at 4:40 am at Hanover Shoe Farms. The 2001 Horse Of The Year, Bunny Lake, was purchased by Hanover Shoe Farms for $400,000 at last fall’s Harrisburg sale. This colt is her second foal. Her first is a yearling filly by Western Hanover, which is owned by Wendy Spring and Shannon Brott. Bunny Lake is scheduled to be bred to Western Hanover this spring.
Breeders Crown champion Shark Gesture drew off by almost 20 lengths in his 1:53.3 qualifier at Balmoral Park Friday morning. Driver Brent Holland took him to the front end of a :27.4 first quarter, then backed the sophomore pacer off to slow middle quarters of :29 flat (56.4 half) and :30.3. The Erv Miller trainee responded with a sizzling :26.1 last panel, going from a three and one-half length lead over Team Hutch at the three-quarter pole to a 19 and 3/4 length victory over the former Illinois-bred stakes champion.
