One of the Greatest Ever....
Stanley Dancer & Super Bowl win the first heat of the Hambletonian on Wednesday, August 30, 1972 at DuQuoin, Illinois State Fairgrounds.
Only Stanley Dancer Could..... ...Start a two-year-old 29 TIMES during a Horse of the Year season: in 1967, with the great Nevele Pride 29 (26-2-0). Stanley went on to win with a trotter and a pacer in under 1:55--when NO one else had done both: with Albatross in 1:54.3, and Nevele Pride in 1:54.4
... Win the Kentucky Futurity in 1972 with a flat tire in TWO different heats. Stanley was also in the first $100,000 Trot (OR RACE) ever---$117,117 in the 1953 Hambo-AND the first million dollar Trot ever, in 1983 with Duenna, the $1,080,000 Hambletonian. Stanley appeared in Hambos 39 YEARS apart. 1953 (debut) 1992 (finale).
...Have campaigned the first trotter AND pacer to EACH win over $100,000 at ages 8-9-10. Pacer: Cardigan Bay 8-9-10-11 and Trotter: Su Mac Lad 8-1-10.
...Have won the Horse of the Year award five of six years-CONSECUTIVELY-and was second in the other: in 1967-1968-1969 with Nevele Pride; he was second in 1970 with Most Happy Fella--even though he won the Triple Crown--Fresh Yankee won the title; and in 1971-1972 with the mighty Albatross.
...Have seen his horses sire more $450 million worth of winners-by FAR AND AWAY the most of any trainer in history, chief among those sires being Albatross, Super Bowl, Most Happy Fella, Nevele Pride, Cumin, Donerail, Bonefish and Dancers Victory.
...Have won 26 Triple Crown races, the most in the sport until John Campbell surpassed it two years ago. Stanley would wind up his career buying a couple of yearlings a season in the mid-1990s, and come up with Act Of Grace, Donerail, Dancers Victory and Lifelong Victory. Stanley won three-THREE-Triple Crowns (Nevele Pride-1968, Most Happy Fella-1970 and Super Bowl-1972) and very nearly FIVE!!. NO OTHER Trainer in the sports history-EVER-has won more than one.(1976-Keystone Ore just missed a neck to Windshied Wiper, Albatross upended in the 1971 Jug). He would win five STRAIGHT Triple Crown races with a pacer :1969-1970-1971-Bye Bye Sam (1), Most Happy Fella (3) and Albatross (1).
...Have bought the first EVER $100,000 yearling-1958-$105,000 Dancer Hanover.
...Have appeared on the Ed Sullivan show with Cardigan Bay shortly after that down under sensation became the first Millionaire in the sports history. Stanley would also sell the first horse in the sport for $1 million. (and THEN do it again). He also had BOTH the richest trotter of all time-Su Mac Lad-AND the richest pacer of all time-Cardigan Bay-at the SAME TIME!!
...Finish 1-2 in the Horse Of The Year Balloting with stablemates, a trotter and a pacer-1972 Albatross and Super Bowl. NO TRAINER has done this since-in 32 years of balloting since then. Stanley would buy, break, raise, train and drive a Triple Crown winner-more than once!
....Set a world record with a trotter and a pacer in the same year-1972, and see it go over THREE decades until another trainer was able to duplicate that feat. In 2004, Jimmy Takter became the first trainer in 32 years to set world records with a trotter and a pacer-BOTH-in the same year. And Jimmy did it in the same DAY!! September 4, 2004 two-year-old filly Pacer-Cabrini Hanover 1:51 flat. Earlier that day-Tom Ridge 1:50.2.
...Have appeared on the Price Is Right television show. Some of Stanley's friends include Joe Dimaggio, Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford.
