A pair of $70,000 Hambletonian eliminations for 3-year-old trotters were carded on Saturday (July 30) at Meadowlands Racetrack.

Broad Bahn won the first elimination in a personal best 1:53.

Broad Bahn (George Brennan) led nearly every step of the way to win the first elimination in a career best 1:53, by three-quarters of a length over Chapter Seven. Broad Bahn is trained by Noel Daley for owner Fam Alber Horse Racing.

First to the lead was Broad Bahn in :27.3, trailed by Fawkes. Those two led the field to the :56.1 half and also the 1:24.2 three-quarters. Chapter Seven (Mike Lachance) got on the engine down the stretch and finished strong to be second to Broad Bahn. Fawkes (Yannick Gingras) was third. Whit was fourth and Luckycharm Hanover was fifth and those two qualified for the final.

"I was able to rate my mile pretty kind and give him his head at the top of the lane and he responded good," said Brennan.

Asked if he thought the colt had a chance to win the Hambletonian, Brennan replied, "I don't see why not, he's big and strong and gets himself where he has to be."

The race was subject to a recall as Chapter Seven, set to start from post six with Mike Lachance, was out of position.

Manofmanymissions (Andy Miller) responded to just the lightest touch in deep stretch to win the final elimination race on Saturday in a time of 1:52.4. Manofmanymissions is owned by the Mystical Marker Farms, Manofmanymissions Stable and Mario Biasuzzi and is trained by Erv Miller.

Manofmanymissions won the second Hambo elim in 1:52.4.

Bambino Hall (Dave Palone) was first to the lead in :27.4, with Whiskey Tax (Yannick Gingras) in behind him. Magnum Kosmos (George Brennan) was out to challenge at the three-eighths and took over the lead to the :56.1 half. He was still in that spot at the 1:24 three-quarters and Manofmanymissions, who'd followed him into the flow, was on the outside around the turn.

Those two led the way home and in deep stretch, Andy Miller brushed his colt with the whip and Manofmanymissions went on by Magnum Kosmos to win by a length. Pastor Stephen was third and Opening Night and Whiskey Tax also gained spots in the final with their fourth and fifth place spots.

"I had to help him along a little bit," said Andy Miller, "But that's him. There was enough there when I asked him and he kept going. I was pretty sure I would get by that horse (Magnum Kosmos); he felt like he had enough trot to go on. I've always known he had a lot of go. That's (Hambletonian) always been in the back of my mind and now we're here."

"This horse, when he's on his A game, he's one of the fastest," said trainer Erv Miller. "Hopefully next week will be his A game again. I'm sure we'll take the inside somewhere, maybe not way inside, I'll talk to Andy. He (the horse) doesn't train much, maybe once a week is the most work he gets."

Haughton Elims Contested
Big Chocolate
Big Chocolate rallied from the back of the field to win one
of two $20,000 eliminations for the Peter Haughton Memorial
Friday night at Meadowlands Racetrack. (Lisa Photo)

Heavy rains soaked the track early in the card, creating sloppyconditions for the 2-year-old trotting colts and geldings. That didn?t stop Big Chocolate from accelerating down the stretch to capture his first careerwin in 1:57. Owner Richard Keys of Chicago, IL bred the colt by Chocolatier- Shez Mine. Big Chocolate was driven by trainer Homer Hochstetler and paid $14.80 to win.

?I just kind of stayed in the back and wanted to see how thinks shook out,? said Hochstetler. ?It wasn?t the greatest of trips but he?s strong enough. If he gets led up he usually trots straight to the wire and he did tonight. He raced really well last week and that was only his second start. I thought he would be stronger tonight.?
Lightning Storm
Lightning Storm and driver Yannick Gingras
rallied in similar fashion, gunning down the
leaders in the stretch, also winning their
elimination in 1:57. (Lisa Photo)

The son of Donato Hanover-Lightning Flower was a $90,000 yearling purchase from the Lexington-Selected Sale for owner Tom Dillion of Anson, ME. Steve Elliot bred the Jonas Czernyson trainee.
Lightening Storm returned $12.00.

The $400,000 Peter Haughton Memorial Final will be contested on Hambletonian day, August 6. Astarsborn Hanover, Blomkvist, No Frosting, Nothing But Class, Possess The Will, Power Play, Quit Smoking Now and Trojan Horse will join Big Chocolate and Lightning Storm in next week's final.

Friday's card also featured a pair of $20,000 eliminations for the$333,200 Merrie Annabelle for 2-year-old trotting fillies.

In the first elimination, Miss Paris [$8.00] shook loose and sailed up the
outside, trotting to victory in 1:57.2 with Dave Miller at the lines. The
daughter by Kadabra-Pizza Dolce was purchased as a yearling for $210,000 at the Lexington-Selected Sale in Kentucky. Melvin Hartman, Herb Liverman and David Mc Duffee own the Nifty Norman trainee.

Check Me Out [$3.00] romped in the second elimination with Tim Tetrick at the lines, winning her Meadowlands debut in 1:56.1. The daughter of Donato Hanover-Illusion is perfect in five starts for trainer Ray Schnittker, who co-owns the filly with Charles Iannazzo.

The field for the $333,200 Merrie Annabelle Final on August 6 is Aunt Mel, Bluff, Check Me Out, D?orsay, Love Walked In, Miss Paris, Quarantine S, Sterling Volo, Swinging Nadine, Upside Hanover

Hong Kong Bets $10 Billion at Sha Tin Racecourse
Yesterday’s set of races at Sha Tin Racecourse was the finale of the 2010-11 racing season and here’s the final tally: The day’s punters bet 1.4 billion Hong Kong dollars (US$180 million) with the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the authority that runs the races, to push the total season take to HK$80.4 billion (US$10.3 billion). The season total is a 6.5% increase over last year’s total bets.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club is the territory’s single-largest taxpayer, thanks to a duty paid on each bet. This year, the government’s take reached HK$9.6 billion, a 6.2% rise over last year’s HK$9 billion.

However, attendance at races dipped slightly by 1.9% to 1.918 million. That represents an average attendance of 23,100 at each racing event, though Sunday’s finale nearly tripled that figure, with more than 62,000 watching in Sha Tin.
