August 13, 2011 Handsoffmycookie Wins Sweetheart Elim Handsoffmycookie rallied in the stretch to win the $20,000 Sweetheart elimination for two-year-old pacing fillies Friday night at Meadowlands Racetrack.
In her Meadowlands wagering debut, Handsoffmycookie and driver Tim Tetrick sailed past heavy favorite Podges Lady to score a one-length victory in a career best 1:52.4. The daughter of Art Major-Observe Me was a $25,000 yearling purchase at the Standardbred Horse Sale in Harrisburg, PA. She is perfect in four starts this season for trainer Scott Di Domenico and owners Jfe Enterprise LLC of Elmsford, NY. She paid $8.80 to win.
?"She?s been perfect all along,?" said driver Tim Tetrick. ?"She likes to win and she loves to pass horses. Every time I?ve tipped her I haven?t had to tell her because she?s already going forward. She?s definitely got a lot of high speed and she had a big last quarter tonight. I think she could be the one to beat in the final. There are a lot of nice fillies in there. Ed?s [Hart] filly [Pirouette Hanover] already went in 1:51 but we get to pick our post [for the final]. My filly is really nice and I think there?s a lot left in her.?"
Tonight?s victory advances Handsoffmycookie to the Sweetheart final, which will be contested for a purse of $364,000 on Saturdy, August 20. Rounding out the field for the final will be Bettor B Lucky, Podges Lady, Major Look, Sangaal, Ramalama, Rockin Belle, Rockin Reese, Yummy Sushi and Pirouette Hanover, who received a bye into the final.
Another Note From Michael... Let me explain my thoughts on why the Balmoral Pick 4 at 15% outperforms the marketplace. Winners get 13.3% more at 15% than at 25%. Based on our average payout of $2,668,the player gets an additional $314 at 15%.
The 25% payout would have been $2,354. This creates more long term winners. This fact cannot be understated. And if you think this extra $314 came at the expense of someone else, think again. We have now tripled our Pick 4 handle in 18 months. That made every vested interest a winner.
Balmoral Park makes more money. Balmoral horsemen make more money. Tracks that simulcast Balmoral make more money. Horsemen at tracks that simulcast Balmoral make more money.
The handle formula of X at 25% has become 3X at 15%. $7,698 wagered on the Pick 4 at 25% in January of 2010 has become $26,191 at 15% in a relatively short 18 months.
Larger pools create larger interest which increases handle not only on the Pick 4, but other races as well. The average Balmoral race in 2011 outhandles the 2010 Balmoral race in a down market.
This allowed us to guarantee our pools ( Thanks USTA ) which has helped immensely.
It took five long months of growing pains through May 2010 to get to the same profitability with the lower rate. In our case short term pain became long term gain and we continue on our tremendous roll. Because Balmoral Park had the guts to ride out the storm in a falling market, we get to tell a great story about doing the right thing and making everybody a winner.
We are now in the enviable position of giving Big M Pick 4 players a reason to stick around after August 20.
Balmoral Pick 4 Pools at Record Levels $1 AVERAGE PAYOUT RISES TO $2,668 – AVERAGE PICK 4 POOL NOW $29,473 By Michael Antoniades, Odds On Racing's Racing Analyst On the heels of a successful July, Balmoral Park released handle figures that continue to amaze.
Through July 31, the 40 guaranteed Pick 4 pools handled $1,178,943 for an average of $29,473 per program. The average one dollar payout was an unprecedented $2,668.31. With the help of the USTA and Track Master, Balmoral is in position to do what no track in the country has been able to do.
The Big M Pick 4 is the best bet in harness racing. Since the Meadowlands Pick 4 began, the Pick 4 dollars wagered on the Meadowlands disappeared when the Big M closes in August and they do not appear until the Big M reopens. The reason up to this point is that no track in the U.S. offered Pick 4 pools that the larger players could wager into except The Big M.
The hope is that the improved Balmoral Pick 4 pools and payouts and the same 15% takeout can keep Meadowlands players wagering after The Big M closes on August 20 until the Meadowlands starts again.
Speaking of The Big M, I can’t express how great Hambletonian Day was. Total handle for the day was $8,290,762 and the Pick 4 pool was over $170,000. With races of that magnitude, they took enough time ( 6 hours and 41 minutes for an average of 28 minutes per race ) to have an outstanding television production with some of the greatest talents in our business having the time to do it right. There is a big lesson here that hopefully other tracks will follow on their signature nights. I urge harness fans to support The Meadowlands for their final two weekends.
Our sister track Maywood Park will now offer ten cent superfecta wagering starting Thursday, August 11. The ten cent wager will be offered on almost every race. The Friday Maywood Pick 4 now has a guaranteed pool of $10,000 with a takeout if 15%.
Balmoral Park races every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday with a first post of 8:10 Eastern, 7:10 Central and 5:10 Pacific. The only ten cent High 5 in harness racing is offered on the final race. Balmoral offers Guaranteed Pick Four pools every racing night with a $1 minimum and a 15% takeout. Sundays $25,000, Saturdays $20,000 and Wednesdays $15,000. The Balmoral Pick 4 is offered on the final four races.
