IL Senate Approves Bill 744
The Illinois Senate approved Bill 744 late Tuesday afternoon by a vote of 30-27 with two other senators voting “present."

Part of that bill would bring slot machines to all Illinois racetracks. The bill had passed through the Illinois House of Representatives on Monday afternoon by a vote of 65-50.

The bill will now move on to the desk of Gov. Pat Quinn for his approval. Balmoral Park President John Johnston is optimistic that Bill 744 would be approved by Gov. Quinn.

“This Bill in its current form would give us the means to put Chicago racing not only on a level playing field with other states that already have slot machines at their racetracks but to move ahead of them because of the money that will be generated,” said Johnston.

“I really believe that it would not take us very long to establish Balmoral and Maywood Park as the premier places to race in all of North America. With the ability to draw all the top drivers, trainers, owners and their horses to Balmoral and Maywood we can move to the top of the sport.”

EHV-1 Outbreak Update
On the afternoon of Wednesday, May 18, there was reportedly one horse in the Weatherford, Texas area that had tested positive for the Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1).

The horse had been at the NCHA Western National Championships in Ogden, Utah. The horse reportedly has been quarantined since its arrival in Weatherford, and was thought to be at a very low risk of shedding the virus prior to the horse's isolation from all other horses. The Texas Animal Health Commission has been contacted, and the facility where the horse that had tested positive for the EHV-1 virus is located has reportedly been quarantined.

The virus can be contagious among horses, but is NOT transmittable to humans. Credible reports indicate cases of EHV-1 in several Western states (Colorado, Utah, California, Washington, Idaho, Arizona and Western Canada). While reported cases of the virus are currently in Western states, the interstate transport of infected horses could cause a wider spread of the virus if we are not all very cautious at this time.

Many qualified veterinarians are working on this EHV-1 issue, and we trust that during the week of May 23rd we have additional factual information and clinical diagnosis on the geographic extent (and any possible new case reports) of the virus.
