Illinois lawmakers are off to the races to save the state's gambling industry. House Bill 3107 would allow horse race tracks in the Chicago area to have slot machines. A similar bill died last year, and the same sponsor, State Rep. Lou Lang (D-Skokie), is at it again. Lang said the plan would create up to 1,500 jobs and rake in up to $400 million for the state.

According to a story posted on the www.bloodhorse.com, the New York State Senate has passed a measure which would attempt to resurrect an off-track betting agency in New York City. If you recall, the former New York City Off-Track Betting (NYC OTB) was closed in early December when the Senate failed to garner enough votes to pass a rescue bill. The now-shuttered agency was a public benefit corporation. The current proposal would attempt to seek out a private company to resuscitate off-track betting in the city.

A similar bill died last year, and the same sponsor, State Rep. Lou Lang (D-Skokie), is at it again. Lang said the plan would create up to 1,500 jobs and rake in up to $400 million for the state. Lang said the horse racing industry is dying, putting at least 40,000 jobs in peril. “We can save those jobs in Illinois if we can pass this bill," Lang said.

According to MI Developments Inc.’s year-end financials, its horse racing and gaming operations lost $76,683,000 in 2010. The racing and gaming properties, which include jewels like Gulstream Park, Santa Anita Park, and a half-interest in Maryland Jockey Club tracks, were transferred to MI Developments on April 30, 2010, as part of the Magna Entertainment Corp. reorganization.
