Yankee Skyscaper Wins Metro Pace
September 2, 2006
Driver Jody Jamieson captured the C$1 million Metro Pace with Yankee Skyscaper, (8-1) in 1:54.3. Laughing Art was second, while Honky Tonk Hanover was third in the one mile test for freshman pacing colts and geldings.
"This horse was awesome tonight. I knew if I got him set up close to the front, he'd fire home," Jamieson noted. "He really dug in."
Chris Ryder trains Yankee Skyscaper, a son of Artiscape who had only $26,400 on his card coming into the Metro final. He added the hefty sum of $500,000 to his modest bankroll.
"I'm really delighted," Ryder said. "We really liked this horse all along. We've been in quite a few million dollar races and haven't been able to win them, so we're really thrilled to break the ice. That horse raced like a closer tonight. We got away about eighth, I believe, then he goes a tremendous second-over trip. I got a little concerned at the three-quarter pole. Just before the head of the stretch, he was not keeping up to his cover, but halfway down the stretch, we really didn't have too much to worry about."
