Classic Series Contested at Dover Monday
November 6, 2006
Many of the sport's top older pacing and trotting stars took their show on the road to Dover Monday to contest the second leg of the Classic Series – an event that has produced its fair share of World Record performances. Casimir Cammotion (Camluck – Adulation) started off today's Classic Series action with a World Record mile of 1:48.3 in the $85,000 Pacing Classic. The seven-year-old gelding erased the former mark of 1:49.1 for an aged pacing gelding on a five-eighths mile oval, which was set by Luckyisasluckydoes in 2004.
Brian Sears guided Casimir Camotion, who is trained by Bruce Saunders for M & M Harness Racing LLC of New York to the impressive score over Holborn Hanover (2nd) and Boulder Creek (3rd). Casimir Camotion, who took the opening leg of the Pacing Classic at Woodbine on October 28, is now 2-for-2 in this year's Classic Series. The victory was the 28th lifetime for the pacer, who bumped his seasonal bankroll to $274,239 and his career total to $1,507,913.
Mystical Sunshine (Yankee Glide – Aura Of Glory) scooped up her second consecutive win in the Classic Series thanks to a 1:55 score in the $85,000 Classic Oaks. The Chris Ryder-trainee, who won the opening leg of the Classic Oaks at Woodbine in 1:53.1, capitalized on a ground-saving trip for driver Ron Pierce for the victory over Solveig (2nd) and Snazzy Millie (3rd). Alvin Jacobson of New York and Sidney Korn of New Jersey hold the papers on the 18-time winner, who upped her career earnings to $1,481,685 with the win.
Glowing Report (Artsplace – Grand Lady) extended her win streak to six-in-a-row thanks to a 1:50.2 score for driver David Miller in today's $85,000 leg of the Classic Distaff. The clocking equaled Bunny Lake's World Record for aged pacing mares on the five-eighths mile oval. Bunny Lake set the standard in 2004 at Dover Downs. Today's victory for Glowing Report gives her back to back scores in the series. The Jerry Silverman-trainee did most of the roadwork en route to the score over Burning Point (2nd) and Loyal Opposition (3rd). Marvin Rounick of Pennsylvania owns Glowing Report, who boasts 22 lifetime wins and earnings in excess of $2.2-million.
Sir Perseverance pulled off the biggest shocker of the day thanks to his World Record clocking of 1:52.4 in the $85,000 Trotting Classic for the duo of trainer George Brennan and trainer Richard 'Nifty' Norman. The 1:52.4 clocking chopped one second off Plantagenet's former standard of 1:53.4 for four-year-old trotting geldings over a five-eighths mile oval. Vivid Photo (Roger Hammer) and Sand Vic (Brian Sears) battled tooth and nail on the lead through early fractions of :26, :54 and 1:23.1. Those fractions took the wind out of the leaders' sails and left the door wide-open for a closer.
Sir Perseverance closed quickest of all after sitting the three-hole trip. He defeated Mr Muscleman (2nd) and Elegant Man (3rd). Vivid Photo and Sand Vic finished 4th and 7th, respectively. Al Libfeld, Marvin Katz and Sam Goldband of Ontario share ownership on Sir Perseverance, who is quickly closing in on career earnings of $700,000.
The third leg of the Classic Series is scheduled for November 18 at The Meadowlands, and the $250,000 finals, which will be raced at the distance of nine furlongs (1 1/4 miles) will be held at Dover Downs on November 27.
