Hambo Hopeful debuts for Gurfein & Lachance

Make You Mine won a $25,000 division (one of three) of the New Jersey Sires Stakes for three-year-old trotting colts and geldings Thursday at the Meadowlands. Make You Mine, driven by Hall of Famer Mike Lachance, made his first steps towards the $1.5 million Hambletonian on August 5 with a half-length victory over Race Fan in a lifetime best 1:56. It was three and a half lengths back to Blue Mac Lad in third.

“He’s the kind of horse that has got to have a trip,” Lachance said. “You can’t really pull on him until you get to the stretch. Tonight I pulled at the five-eighths and he had a good kick on the stretch. For his first start, I was happy with him. He looked like he’s coming back good”

Trained by Ron Gurfein, Make You Mine won $206,720 in 14 starts as a two-year-old.

“The horse is a one-run horse,” Gurfein said. “He’ll beat horses he’s not supposed to beat, and he’ll get beat by horses he’s not supposed to get beat by. He was good tonight, though, because he had to pull him a little earlier than normal because he had a 82-1 in front of him; and you don’t want to sit in behind him. I was happy with his performance in his first start. From the top of the stretch to the finish, he’s a gorilla.”

Lachance and Gurfein teamed to win the 1999 Hambletonian with Make You Mine’s sire, Self Possessed. Make You Mine is owned by Brittany Farms of Versailles, Kentucky; Sampson Street Stables of Old Forge, Pennsylvania; Jerry Silva of Bellmore, New York; and Mathias Meinzinger of Central Islip, New York.

The winners of the other New Jersey Sires Stakes divisions on Thursday night were: Ira K [race five, 1:56.4] and Enough Talk [race six, 1:57.2]
