Ricky Macomber Takes Hoosier Title
July 2, 2007
Ricky Macomber, Jr. earned his first career driving title on Saturday, June 30, at Hoosier Park. Macomber earned 112 wins during the 61-day meet to achieve the honor over five-time champ Don Irvine, Jr., who finished second with 95 wins.
A native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Macomber followed his family into harness racing and began driving in 1997 shortly after graduating from Gallaudette University in Washington, D.C. He has driven at the Anderson, Ind.-based facility since then and finished as high as second in the standings in the past few years.
Macomber’s biggest wins were recorded at Hoosier Park in the $200,000 Dan Patch Invitational. He is a two-time winner of the event, guiding Royalflush Hanover in 2000 and E Dee’s Cam in 2002. He is only the third driver to surpass the 100-win mark since 2002 when racing dates were shortened from the previous 120-day schedule.
Rick Moore, Hoosier Park's president and general manager, made the winner's circle presentation to Macomber. Also, Macomber signed several whips and passed them out to the crowd following his presentation. A total of 3,494 people were in attendance for the season finale.
