One of the most rugged "distaff" pacers in our 200 plus year history is Eternal Camnation (formerly Allamerican Coin), by Cam Fella out of the Nihilator mare Cool World.
Bred by Lewis Arno and Fred Hertrich III, she sold for "35 G’s" as a yearling and went on to win $3,748,574 during a brilliant career covering 101 starts over six years…knocking noses, necks and heads with the very best the sport had to offer.
Three time Breeders Crown champion, four time Dan Patch Award winner, multi-year divisional winner in her respective classes in USTA-USHWA balloting, Eternal Camnation reached the winner’s circle on 47 occasions, taking a lifetime mark of 1:49.2 as a five year-old in 2002.
She began her racing career in 1999 winning 12 of 13 starts and $660,894 to go along with a magnificent mark of 1:52.3 over Mohawk’s seven-eighths mile course.
That mile was in the $637,833 Breeders Crown and, though parked every step of the mile, she blew by her competition with an eye-opening burst (her last half :55.2) that solidified her selection as Two Year-Old Pacing Filly of the Year.
At three, she won six of 12 and another $531,102, lowering her mark to 1:51.1 over Lexington’s Red Mile during their fall Grand Circuit meeting. Her big success, though, was in the $535,300 Fan Hanover at Woodbine where she gutted out a game win in 1:51.2.
In 2001, age four now, she added a septet of victories, including her first 1:50 (exactly) mile in late May followed by her first sub-1:50 performance (1:49.4) in the $278,500 Lady Liberty at The Big M.
Five weeks later, Eternal Camnation won her Breeders Crown event—purse $332,500—at The Meadowlands in 1:50 and a tick and then went north of the border to win a couple of rich stakes events at Woodbine and Mohawk to close out her year with another $763,315 added to her bulging bankroll.
She was then voted "Pacing Mare of the Year."
Though winless in her first nine starts in 2002, "Camnation" began to regain her championship form as the summer months rolled around and scored seven wins in 21 trips post-ward…good for $521,741, the highlight of her year being on Hambletonian Day at The Meadowlands when she paced her final panel in :26.2 to grind by Bunny Lake in 1:49.2, which was to be her lifetime mark. She closed out that year with an outstanding performance at Mohawk in the $194,040 Milton Stakes, winning while parked the mile in 1:51.1 and, once again, was voted the top pacing mare of the year.
After a seven month hiatus from the racing wars, Eternal Camnation returned to competition at age six and, after a "slow" start, dominated the competition on the strength of a summer-fall nine race winning streak, including a 1:50 triumph in the Milton Stakes and a gutsy win at 1ΒΌ miles in the Classic Distaff Final at Dover Downs in 2:22.4. She wound up the year with 11 wins in 20 starts and over $900,000 in bounty and, for the third straight year, was voted best pacing mare.
The year 2004 was to be Eternal Camnation’s last season on the racetrack and she managed four victories in 18 starts good for $363,176, bringing her lifetime bankroll to $3,748,574, the most of any mare in the long history of the sport and the second richest pacer of all time.
Trained by Jeff Miller, Eternal Camnation was driven to her many victories by a multitude of drivers, including Eric Ledford, Randy Waples, Luc Ouellette, Trevor Ritchie, Richard Silverman, Jay Cross and Jeff Miller.
