Though she never won any of the voting contests for pacing filly or mare of the year during her illustrious career, Sanabelle Island reached the winner’s circle on 57 occasions during a seven year career encompassing 110 starts.

Even a perfect 15-for-15 juvenile season in 1996 didn’t get the job done, probably because she stayed close to home and beat up on the girls in the Maryland Sires Stakes…earning every single dime available to her in purse money--$123,632. Her mark that year was 1:55.2, tossing in a :27.2 final quarter in that one just to show everybody a little somethin’ extra.

As a three year-old in 1997, her winning streak stretched to 23 before she tasted defeat for the first time. Nonetheless, she finished the year with 10 wins in 17 starts, including triumphs in a trio of Maryland Sire Stakes, Maywood’s Cinderella and Sportsman Park’s American National. Her earnings for ’97 were a healthy $366,845 to go along with a reduced mark of 1:52.2 at The Big M.

She won another 10 races in 1998, including a sweep of the Distaff series at Los Alamitos and "Open" events for mares at The Meadowlands, Dover Downs and Freehold Raceway.

She further proved her speed and endurance by winning a pair of mile and a quarter events and another at a mile and an eighth. She earned $169,100 that year.

At age five, her scorecard read 5-6-1 in 16 starts with another $190,000 plus in earnings and, as the century closed, she was first, second or third in 20 of 22 starts in 2000, winning nine of those events and $406,635. She lowered her mark, too, pacing in 1:51 in the $113,000 Overbid Final at The Meadowlands (then a stakes record) and an identical time in winning the Classic at Woodbine.

At seven, she started the new century on fire, winning five of her first six starts and winding up earning $265,402 for the year.

Her final racing was as an eight year-old in 2002. She won three times that year, earned $119,700 and had her last hurrah at Woodbine in the $65,000 Classic, scoring a wire-to-wire win in a lifetime best 1:50.4s…at odds of 47 to 1!

Sanabelle Island was driven almost exclusively by Steve Warrington throughout her career.
