CR Kay Suzie

Though this daughter of Royal Troubador had a relatively brief racing career, her quickness and heart were characteristics that have been—and will be—long remembered in the sport. Bred by Carl and Rod Allen, “Suzie” was out of the Speedy Somolli mare Country Kay Sue who, though having a “Q” mark of 1:57.3f, earned nary one single dime on the racetrack. But her daughter sure did!

With just 24 lifetime starts, C R Kay Suzie won 18 times and $1,611,131, taking her lifetime mark of 1:52.3 in the 1996 Breeders Crown Open Trot at the Meadowlands, capped, by the way, with a final quarter—her very last on a racetrack—in :27.2. Her career was distinguished by the manner in which she won—demolishing her competition.

As a 2-year-old in 1994, she won seven of nine and $450,596, taking a 1:55.1 mark at The Meadowlands in the $385,500 Merrie Annabelle. That clocking, incidentally, was, then, the fastest mile in a race by a two year-old trotter on a one mile oval…regardless of sex. She then accomplished the same feat on a five-eighths mile track and a half miler, as well.

Those who saw her Sept. 9 outing at Rosecroft Raceway in the Kentucky Standardbred will long remember how this two year-old trotting filly left the gate “like an older pacer,” as Gerry Connors remembered.

The quarter in :26 and 4…half in :55 and 1…three quarters in 1:24.2. And, with the decision well sealed, coasting home in 1:56.1.

At Freehold, she won the New Jersey Futurity by 18½ lengths and a pair of NJSS events by 23½ and 11¾, respectively, before closing out her juvenile campaign at Garden State Park by winning the $300,000 Goldsmith Maid in 1:56…by 14¾ lengths. She was voted Two Year-Old Trotting Filly of the Year in 1994.

At three, she won 10 of 13, $910,000 and change and lowered her mark to 1:52.4 in the World Trotting Derby at DuQuoin…against the boys—her winning margin being just short of five lengths. Oh, almost forgot…that was her second heat of the hot afternoon after winning her opening heat in 1:53.2.

She also won the Yonkers Trot that year—whipping the boys from post eight—in 1:56…by 7½ lengths and the Breeders Crown Trot for Mares (though she was three) at Delaware, Ohio. Supplemented for $34,000 to gain entry to that event, she had to conquer older mares and a muddy racetrack to earn that “Crown.” Her driver, Rod Allen said it was one of her “greatest efforts.”

She was voted Horse of the Year in 1995.

Battling soundness problems, “Suzie” made but two starts at four, with her final appearance being against the boys in the aforementioned $500,000 Breeders Crown Open Trot, in which she won, as said, in her lifetime best time of 1:52.3.
