Fancy Filly wins the 2009 Breeders Crown at Woodbine

Fancy Filly capped off a solid freshman season to win the $628,178 Breeders Crown 2-year-old filly pace on Oct. 24 at Woodbine Raceway in Toronto, Canada, with Brian Sears in the sulky in 1:53.4.

"She raced all year long and has always stepped up. It's vacation time for her," commented George Teague. "She’s been awesome all year long, never been anything but impressive."

Fancy Filly was the third choice at 5-2, set sail for the leader in mid-stretch and closed determinedly for the narrow win, her 10th in 12 outings this year. The daughter of Western Hanover earlier won the Three Diamonds at Chester on Sep. 20 and was a hard-charging third to Put On A Show in the rich She’s A Great Lady Stakes at Mohawk on Aug. 20.

“The filly has got a lot of fight in her,” said Sears. “The other filly paced away from her a little bit, but she never knows to quit. She dug right in and chased her down. I was really happy to win with her because I got a bad trip when I finished third with her in the She’s A Great Lady. I was glad to make up for it. She’s a really nice filly. She deserves this.”

Fancy Filly's top freshman effort came when she scored a 1 and 3/4 lengths victory in the $500,000 Three Diamonds, setting a track and world record for 2-year-old pacing fillies on a five-eighths mile track, on a breezy September 20 afternoon at Harrah's Chester Casino and Racetrack.

Fancy filly also scored victories in a Pennsylvania Sire Stakes win at the Meadows with a time of 1:55.1, the second fastest for a 2-year-old pacing filly on a five-eighths-mile oval in 2009, and had two straight wins at the Meadowlands in 2-year-old filly races with times of 1:55.4 and 1:58 in her first two outings on a racetrack.
