Odds On Moinet

Odds On Moinet garnered her fifth victory in the Balmoral Park Filly & Mare Open ranks this year--stopping the timer in 1:53 on March 31 with Marcus Miller at the lines.

After having raced mostly on the East Coast in 2011, Odds On Moinet seems to have found her niche in the Chicago filly and mare open ranks, and she definitely has a penchant for Balmoral Park.

Though she had her previous five-race win sweep snapped on March 11 (when she finished third), the venerable mare is currently the undisputed queen of the Chicago pacing ranks.

The 5-year-old daughter of Real Artist-Aparte-Cambest had racked up a quintet of victories beginning Dec. 10 of last year at Balmoral Park, when she romped to a 1:53 come-from-behind effort with Marcus Miller at the lines. She followed that up with a 1:52 wire-to-wire, Dec. 17 triumph and was in the Crete winner’s circle again on Jan. 14 (in 1:53.1), on Feb. 12 (in 1:52.3) and on Feb. 26 (1:53.4).

Conditioned by Robin Schadt throughout her career, Odds On Moinet has career earnings of $322,722 and seasonal earnings of $41,920. Schadt first spied the filly at the 2008 Harrisburg sale.

“We bought her for $32,000,” Schadt recalled. “Her pedigree looked inviting and Dana liked the way she looked and the way she was put together.”

Odds On Moinet is the sixth foal out of Aparte and is a full sister to Real Celebration p,6,1:49.2M ($457,999) and Nvincbl Artist 6, 1:50.1M ($416,995) and has half-siblings in: Ideal Party (by Western Ideal) p, 3, 1:53.3F ($60,815) and Partatmyplace (by Artsplace) p,4,1:52.4s ($38,606).

“She was a little tough initially to work with,” Schadt acknowledged. “She had an independent mind and took her a while to mature. She came out in the fall of her 2-year-old and raced nine times that season. She always had speed—she’s a good sized filly with a long gait—but had to work through her maturity issues.”

Odds On Moinet earned $15,289 at 2, with a two wins, and four seconds in nine trips postward that year, recording a freshman record of 1:57.2h at Maywood Park in early November of that year.

As a sophomore in 2012, Odds On Moinet added $197,438 to her bankroll via victories in the $12,500 elim and $61,000 Tender Loving Care Series Final at The Meadowlands; a pair of $16,000 Night Style legs at The Big M; a $66,538 PASS at The Meadows; a $87,320 PASS at The Meadows; a $87,719 PASS at The Meadows. She took her 3-year-old record of 1:51.4M in a Night Styles win on March 18 of that year.

“She’s the type of mare that you have to manage a bit,” Schadt confirmed. “We break up her schedule a bit—she gets a little bit of the pool, paddock time, a little bit of the wheel (equisizer), and a little bit of track time.”

Last year at age 4, Odds On Moinet shifted between racing at Balmoral and the East Coast. She added another $68,075 to her coffers; recording stats of 6-6-3 in 25 starts.

“She wasn’t as sharp in 2011, for no definitive reason,” Schadt said. “But I think the main thing that’s helped to turn her around is that she really just enjoys being home—being where she was raised and grew up, basically. She knows the routine there and she enjoys it. We’re able to mix up life for her there and that seems to keep her the happiest. I just don’t think she’s as happy when she’s on the road and away from home.”

“She’s professional in every way,” Schadt added. “She’s easy to train, easy to drive and is really simple in terms of rigging. Her best asset is that she digs in at the wire. If she gets in front, she’ll relax a bit and if a horse comes at her, she wants to fight and stave off a challenge.”

Schadt, who has been winter-training nine babies at South Florida Trotting Center since last November, says she gives a lot of credit to her training assistant, Frank Moseley and Odds On Moinet’s caretaker, Jose.

“Frankie’s been with me for years,” she confirmed. “He does a great job of overseeing Moinet’s schedule while I’m in Florida, and Jose just takes outstanding care of her. I’m very fortunate to have both of them looking out for her while I’m down here.”

Schadt—who will return to Odds On Acres in Crete in early April—said plans are to keep Odds On Moinet in Chicago for the time being.

“As long as that race (Filly & Mare Open) keeps filling at Balmoral, we’ll stick to racing there,” she said.
