George At Bigs Scores Upset in Hirt Final

Friday, January 27, 2006

George At Bigs held off Ideal Lover by half a length to win the $85,000 Clyde Hirt Final, Friday night at the Meadowlands in 1:50.3. He’s A Nice Guy was third by three and a quarter lengths. The time was a fifth of a second off the stakes record set by Great Expense in 2005, and was a lifetime best for the four-year-old son of Cam’s Card Shark who now has four wins, one second and two thirds from 29 career starts. He has earned $155,950 for owner John D. Fielding of Toronto, Ontario.

George Brennan was in the sulky for the gelding’s second straight win. It was also the second straight time the Mark Harder trainee was saddled with the outside post position.

“It was an unlucky draw again,” said Brennan. “I just had to work from there. I left out of there and dropped into the two-hole. They started coming so I pulled him out to the lead. He still felt pretty good. I definitely wanted to get away from Ideal Lover; I knew he’d be coming. I had a lot of confidence in him. Last year, he was racing against Rocknroll Hanover and American Ideal. He had a class edge on these. He’s a lot more mature and better gaited this year.”
