Dr No Captures $700,000 Haughton Memorial

July 9, 2005

Dr No said Yes, Yes, Yes!!! en route to winning the Haughton
Saturday night at The Meadowlands for driver Cat Manzi.

There was no denying Dr No a one-length victory in the $700,000 William R. Haughton Memorial, the seventh race on Saturday night at the Meadowlands. The four-year-old caught Boulder Creek for his third win in nine starts this year, pacing the mile in 1:50.1. Ponder, the 9-5 favorite, finished third by one and a half lengths.

"I had a few different scenarios in my mind and none of them happened," said Cat Manzi. "I had to wing it. "I've raced him three or four times, and he has never gone a bad race; he's a professional," said Hall of Famer Manzi, who won the Haughton in 1998 with Pacific Fella. "I was second over, not into outrageous fractions."

Dr No, a homebred son of No Nukes, improved his career record to nine wins, four seconds and five thirds from 35 starts and earnings of $694,064. Trained by Bill Elliott, he races for Brian Legge of Toronto, Ontario; Dr. David Legge of Ajax, Ontario and Robert Stewart of Oshawa, Ontario.

"He raced super," driver Brian Sears said of Boulder Creek. "I had a chance for a minute, but Dr No has a good lick to him. He's really coming around. Three weeks ago he wasn't good at all. But he's really improving now. I didn't know how the race would unfold. I thought I'd be following Ponder. Those were pretty soft fractions; I was pretty happy with that."
