Leading Xample Takes $650,000 Haughton

July 15, 2006

Leading Xample and David Miller paced hard on the outside in the final strides to win the $650,000 Haughton Memorial for older pacers in a career best 1:48.2 by a neck. Ponder (John Campbell) was second and Hop Sing (Ron Pierce) was third.

Boulder Creek was first to the lead at the :26 first quarter, with Hop Sing behind him and Dr. No behind him. Boulder Creek (Brian Sears) faced no pressure to the :53.1 half and with three-eights of a mile to go, Dr No (Cat Manzi) was out to challenge, and got to Boulder Creek's wheel by the 1:21.3 three quarters. Boulder Creek led the field in to the stretch, with Dr No pressuring on the outside.

David Miller had Leading Xample on the move on the outside when the field straightened out for home and those two wore down Boulder Creek in the final lengths while Ponder was coming between horses and Hop Sing making up ground on the rail. Ponder was second and Hop Sing third along the rail. The four-year-old, My Xample (The Panderosa-Lady Shania) is owned by the Leading Xample Stable of Port Perry, Ontario and trained by William Elliott.

He's got one humongous kick," said David Miller. "If he gets dragged in to it, he's a real factor. I was right where he wanted to be [past the half]. I was following Ponder and figured he'd take me where I wanted to go. My horse, he got by him real easy and then he kind of let up. I had to keep chasing him right to the wire. When I tipped him, he just flew on right past him. I felt pretty confident. He's very sharp right now, he's on the up and up.

" My horse raced good," said Ponder's driver John Campbell. "He just got out-kicked in the stretch. Dave's horse raced great tonight."
