Dr No & Ponder Headline Haughton

July 8, 2006

Dr No, the 2005 winner of the William R. Haughton Memorial, headlines the field of 10 free for all pacers who, on Saturday night, earned spots in the $650,000 Haughton Final on July 15 at the Meadowlands. The top five from each of the two elims have advanced to the final.

Dr No, driven by Cat Manzi and trained by William Elliott, got up for a three-quarter-length victory over Mypanmar in the first of the two $50,000 Haughton elims. Pacific Renegade was third. Load the Dice, fourth, and Canyon Wind, fifth, also earned spots in the final.

Dr No, owned by the Ontario-based partnership of Brian Legge, Dr. David Legge and Robert Stewart, paced the mile in 1:48. By virtue of his win he elected to have the rail in the final.

Ponder, driven John Campbell, got up in the final strides to win the second division in 1:48.2, a career best. In a tight photo finish, Leading X Ample was second by nose, and Boulder Creek was third by neck. Hop Sing and Casimir Camotion grabbed the last two spots. A length separated the first six horses.

Ponder, owned by trainer Robert McIntosh, CSX Stables and John Fielding, was third in the 2005 edition of the Haughton, finishing behind Dr No and Boulder Creek. By virtue of his win he has elected to have the two hole in the final.
