The Horseplayers Association of North America (HANA) was a self-formed organization representing Standardbred & Thoroughbred horseplayers throughout North America. "HANA is committed to giving horseplayers a voice," is what their mission statement reads.
Among the areas where HANA thinks that racing could present a more attractive product to potential customers and betters are: universal signal availablity to all outlets at all times, without exception; the long-awaited and long-debated lowering of takeout rates--HANA's ideal figure would be in the 10% range, a number not far off from "optimization of handle" studies by university economists; a severe hard-line stand against drug misusages in racehorses; "pool integrity," which they definte as a secure tote system which displays correct and final odds as soon as the gate springs; and large, competitive fields.
Headquartered in Virginia, HANA has Abe Diamond as its president, while its secretary has been Dean Towers, known to many harness racingi participants, an Ontario horse owner who wrote his univeristy thesis on off-track betting.
