C$697,685 Governor's Cup at Woodbine
October 20, 2005
Jereme's Jet & Palone Ranger head up a field of two-year-old colt and gelding pacers in this Saturday's C$697,685 Governor’s Cup for two-year-old male pacers at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto.
Driven by Paul MacDonell, Jereme’s Jet won his Cup elimination race by 1¾ lengths over Western Cyclone in 1:54.4. It was the Jet’s first start since winning the C$1 million Metro Pace at Mohawk on September 17 at Mohawk Racetrack. He has won all four of his lifetime races, including a 1:50.4 triumph in the Metro – the third fastest time of the season for two-year-old pacers, and earned $448,910.
"He is just absolutely perfect. I didn’t know they make them like that," trainer Tom Harmer said. "He wears no equipment whatsoever. Usually the good ones are mean or have something unpleasant with them. This horse, he’ll stand perfect in his stall and come out and want to be petted. He’s just an all-around perfect horse."
Owned by the Genesis Racing Stable of Plainfield, Illinois, Jereme’s Jet (Western Hanover-Ohyouprettything) had just one race under his belt when Harmer decided to send him to the Metro.
"Training him down, he was kind of pudgy, but he acted like he could do anything," Harmer said. "It wasn’t long before he showed me he was something special. I wasn’t sure about sending him to the Metro with only one start; I didn’t want to look stupid. I decided to give him a good training trip and see what he was made of. After that, there was no doubt in my mind that he was very special. He’s the fastest two-year-old I’ve ever sat behind; maybe one of the fastest two-year-olds I’ve ever seen."
Jereme’s Jet, driven by Paul MacDonell, beat favorite Palone Ranger by a quarter-length in the Metro. It was another 4½ lengths back to third-place finisher Perfect Union. Palone Ranger has won three of six starts, finished second three times and earned $313,561. His only loss in his last four races came in the Metro. Palone Ranger, driven by David Miller and trained by Chris Ryder, won his Governor’s Cup elimination race by 2¼ lengths over Artstanding in 1:53.1.
"It’s going to be a good race," Harmer said. "It looks like two superstars, it’s too bad they’ve got to race against each other. Hopefully, Jereme’s Jet is in the right place at the right time."
