50-1 Longshot Giacomo Wins the Kentucky Derby
May 7, 2005
Giacomo & jockey Mike Smith win the 131st Kentucky Derby
Mike Smith guided longshot Giacomo ($102.60) to victory in the 131st Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs this afternoon. The son of Holy Bull--Set Them Free left from post ten among the 20 Derby starters, carrying the standard weight of 126 pounds, scoring his first victory of the year. He was one of only three horses in the Derby field to have the same jockey--Mike Smith--in all of his seven starts, and it was the first time he had raced outside of California. The roan was named after rock singer Sting's son Jack, and is trained by John Shirreffs. This was the second largest upset in Kentucky Derby upset, behind Donerail's 1913 upset victory. The Derby superfecta paid $1,728,507 and both $1 tickets worth $864,253.50 were bet in New Jersey, one each at the Meadowlands and Freehold.
