Genghis Khan earned nearly a million dollars on the racetrack, and while he fared well as a 2- and 3-year-old, it was as an aged pacer that his star shined the brightest.
The son of Meadow Skipper won six starts at age 4, facing some of the toughest pacers at The Big M, Yonkers and Roosevelt Raceways in 1980. He was campaigned by his trainer and owner, Eddie Cobb.
The following season, he was shipped West, making his presence felt at Los Alamitos, Hollywood Park, Edmonton and Del Mar. At ages 5 and 6, he became even stronger, winning at tracks throughout North America and taking his finest mark of 1:51.4 at The Meadowlands in 1982 in a $1,000 exhibition event.
Leaving from post three, Genghis Khan was first up in the three-horse field, and tripped the timer at the three-quarters in 1:24 before flying home 32 lengths ahead of his rivals. It was the fastest race mile in history at the time, eclipsing the old mark set by the mighty Niatross just two years prior.
Plagued throughout his career by brittle feet, Genghis Khan was retired later that year and went on to post a midly successfuly career as a stallion, siring 226 performers, 91 in 2:00 and 20 in 1:55 who earned $7,195,910.
