Gallo Gives Something Back...

June 4, 2005

After providing so many thrilling moments on the racetrack, Gallo Blue Chip offers one more gift when he officially retired Saturday night at the Meadowlands. Owner Martin Scharf of Lawrence, New York, will provide the Gallo Blue Chip Scholarship in honor of his beloved pacer. Each year, a $10,000 scholarship will be awarded to the child of a harness horse trainer or caretaker licensed in New York or New Jersey in the year of application. The applicant must be a high school senior or an undergraduate student. The Harness Horse Youth Foundation will administer the scholarship.

"I made a lot of money with Gallo in harness racing, and I wanted to give something back," Scharf explained. "I wanted to help some young person with abilities who wants to succeed in life with an education. I hope we can do this scholarship annually and forever."

Gallo Blue Chip, now eight, retires with 53 wins, 19 seconds and nine thirds from 133 starts. The 2000 Horse of the Year is the all-time leading money-earning pacer with a bankroll of $4,260,959.

Applications are available on the Meadowlands website or through the Harness Horse Youth Foundation, 16575 Carey Road, Westfield, Indiana 46074: 317-867-5877 or by email to
