The Meadows August 8-12
Dave Palone had a remarkable week during the Grand Circuit’s annual stop at The Meadows, posting eight victories in the 31 stakes races. The western Pennsylvania oval’s leading reinsman won a pair of $50,000 Adios eliminations for three-year-old pacing colts, scoring with Sandro Hanover and True North Hanover. He was also victorious in two $50,000 Adioo Volo divisions for the three-year-old pacing fillies, piloting Ideal Weather and Pilgrims Witchie to the winner’s circle. Palone’s other four victories came in divisions of the Arden Downs with Western Montana ($18,443 2FP), Western Graduate ($18,443 2FP), Bossy Boss ($17,101 2CT) and Godiva Hall ($15,521 2FT). Brian Sears (five wins) and Ray Paver (four wins) also had big weeks at The Meadows, while Mike Lachance won the biggest race, capturing the $300,000 Delvin Miller Adios Final with Cactus Creek in a time of 1:50.2.

Breeders Crown Events at The Big M, July 21-July 29
At The Meadowlands, a pair of $45,000 Breeders Crown Pace elimination races were contested on Saturday (July 22). The opener went to Holborn Hanover (George Brennan) in 1:48, defeating Stonebridge Regal and Maltese Artist. Lis Mara (Brian Sears) captured the nightcap in 1:48.1 over Ponder and P-Forty-Seven.

Tompkin-Geers Events at Scioto, July 20-22
Scioto Downs held the three-year-old Tompkins-Geers races, and seven different drivers captured those stakes. In the marquee event, the $44,600 three-year-old colt pace, Randy Tharps piloted Ivegotwhatuneed to a 1:52.2 score over Ramblin Bunny and Eagle Real One.

John Campbell was the driving leader during the two-year-old Tompkins-Geers events held at Tioga Downs. John’s victories came with On Your Mach (1:56.4) in a $28,805 two-year-old colt pace division and Wendy Jo Rogue (2:01.2) and Pampered Princess (2:01) in $19,065 divisions of the two-year-old filly trot.

Freshman & Sophomores Shine at The Poconos, July 8-14
Two-year-old trotting fillies and three-year-old pacing colts and geldings took center stage at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs on Saturday (July 8), as they competed in the W.N. Reynolds Memorial stakes to kick off Grand Circuit week. Driver Mike Simons managed a win in both classes. He drove the two-year-old trotting miss Shroom to a front-running victory in a time of 2:01. Simons added a pacing win in upset fashion with Runover Again, in the day’s fastest time of 1:51.

The other two divisions of the three-year-old colt pace were won by Wiggle Out Of This, driven by Kevin Sizer, and Sand Gogh, driven by Tony Hall. Each won in 1:51.3.

Pampered Princess (Marcus Johansson) set the standard for the trotting fillies, winning the day’s first division in 1:59.4, a time that stood at day’s end as the fastest of the trots. Other winners were Pacific Edge (Ed Lohmeyer), in 2:00.4; Missymae Bluestone (Tom Jackson) in 2:01.1; and Classical Mary (Dave Palone) in 2:01.

Sophomores In Action at Goshen, June 30-July1
Stephane Bouchard and Ray Schnittker were the leading drivers during the Landmark Stakes at Goshen Historic Track with six victories each.

Bouchard was in the winner’s circle with Predator DVM ($18,036 three-year-old colt pace division), Bikini Bottom and Princess Austral ($11,105 three-year-old filly pace splits), B Smart and Rollonriverenap ($5,710 two-year-old colt pace divisions), and Bet Your Life ($3,817 two-year-old filly pace split).

Schnittker’s victories came with Tuffofthetoughest ($18,536 three-year-old colt pace division), Frank The Hands ($15,511 three-year-old colt trot split), Savannah Star ($5,710 two-year-old colt pace division), Julieannie ($3,817 two-year-old filly trot split), and Liv Blue Chip and Vodka Gomlick ($3,817 two-year-old filly pace divisions).

Donato Hanover and driver Ron Pierce captured the first of two $55,675 EH Harriman Cups in 1:57.2, besting rivals Strive for Perfect (Ray Remmen) second and Lancelot Trotsalot (Jeff Gregory) third. Donato Hanover is a son of Andover Hall, out of the Donerail mare D Train. He is trained by Steve Elliott for David Scharf, Gold Touch Stable and Steve Arnold of New York & New Jersey.   Fractions:  :29.1,  :58.1,  1:28.2, 1:57.2

In the second Harriman Cup, which sported a purse of 56,325, Peyton Way and driver-trainer Jimmy Takter powered to victory in the final strides to win in 1:59.3, besting the pace-setting Rushmore Hanover (Ray Remmen) who had led for most of the mile. New Hampshire Boy (Ray Schnittker) was third. Fractions:  :29.2, 1:00.4, 1:31.3,  1:59.3

In the first $53,500 Goshen Cup for freshman pacers, What's Up Now (Ron Pierce) stormed to a new stake record clocking of 1:52.1. Stablemate Mattdultery (Yannick Gingras) was a close second with Wearable Art (John Campbell) third. The previous record of 1:52.2 had been set in 2005 by Western Ace, with Ron Pierce driving as well, and George Teague, Jr doing the training, as he did with this year's winner.

The second Goshen Cup was captured by the Artiscape freshman Artzina and driver John Campbell in 1:53.2. Artzina powered by the leading Twin Character (Brian Sears--second) and TJ's Ideal (George Brennan--third) to nab down his first career victory for trainer Dylan Davis. The youngster is owned by Kal Liebowitz & Marc Rubach of New York & New Jersey.     Fractons:  :27.4,  :56.2,  1:26,  1:53.2

Freshman Fillies Score on June 18 at The Big M (Historic Series)
Julie’s Solo
and Isabella Blue Chip each won a $47,750 Debutante division for pacers and Possess the Magic and Maryanne K captured $61,250 Acorn divisions for trotters as two-year-old fillies were on display in featured events Wednesday night, the start of Historic Week at the Meadowlands.

Julie’s Solo scored a half-length victory over Betting Machine with Jayne’s Character third. The mile was timed in 1:54.1, matching the stakes record shared by Woodsie And Buster [1998] and Allamerican Raquel [2002].

A homebred daughter of Pro Bono Best–-Laughlin Julie, Julie’s Solo posted her first victory in her pari-mutuel debut. Driven by George Brennan and trained by Brian Magie, she races in the name of Lynne Mondrick of Durhamville, New York.

Isabella Blue Chip scored a length and a half tally over Kisskissbangbang in the second Debutante divisions. Striptease Hall was third. A daughter of Bettor’s Delight, Isabella Blue Chip, driven by David Miller and trained by George Teague Jr., paced the mile in 1:54.4. She is now two-for-two for the partnership of Only Money Inc. and Teague Inc., both of Delaware. She was a $40,000 yearling purchase at the Standardbred Horse Sale in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

The team of driver Mike Lachance and trainer Ron Gurfein posted three victories on the card, including a division of the Acorn, with Possess the Magic who drew off to a two and three-quarter-length victory over Classical Mary with Celebrity Lady third.

Possess the Magic, bred and owned by Brittany Farms of Versailles, Kentucky, is by Self Possessed-–Chorine Hanover. Self Possessed was one of a trio of Hambletonian winners trained by Gurfein and driven by Lachance. The duo also won a non-wagering race for freshman trotting fillies with Aurora Hall and the fourth race trot for three-year-old fillies with Gracious Glide.

Maryanne K won by three lengths over Trapezius in second Acorn division. Contender Hanover was third by three and three-quarter lengths. Maryanne K, driven by Yannick Gingras and trained by John Shultz, trotted the mile in 1:59.3 in her racing debut. The daughter of Yankee Glide-–Victory Slide races for Ira Kristel of Manhasset, New York, who purchased her for $32,000 at the Lexington Select Sale.

Dave Magee was the driving star during Grand Circuit action at Hawthorne as he piloted four horses to the winner’s circle. Magee was in victory lane behind Devilfish (1:50.1) in the $59,500 World Series for three-year-old colt pacers; Roman Holiday (1:56.2) in the $44,500 World Series for three-year-old colt trotters; Go Go Gabby (1:56.4) in the $38,000 World Series for three-year-old filly trotters; and Fox Valley Smoothy (2:04.3) in a $32,875 division of the World Series for two-year-old filly trotters.

The $166,500 Dexter Cup Final. A pair of Lady Suffolk divisions were held on Friday, May 12. In the Dexter Cup Final for three-year-old colt trotters, Ray Schnittker, Steve Demeter, Kelk's Inc. and Earl Scheelar's A Rod (George Brennan) held off stablemate Frank The Hands (Jeff Gregory) by one length in a time of 1:58.1. Wildwood Days (John Campbell) finished third. For A Rod, the victory was his fourth in nine season's starts, lifting his 2006 earnings to $106,285 for trainer Paul Doherty.

The $47,600 first Lady Suffolk split (for three-year-old trotting fillies) was captured by Ivan Sugg's Heathers Dream (David Miller) in 2:00.2. The heavily favored daughter of Dream Vacation led virtually every step of the mile in defeating Self Admirer (Steve Smith) by one length with Wolf's Fawn (Jeff Gregory) third. Heathers Dream has won both of her 2006 starts for owner/trainer Sugg and with her Lady Suffolk score, she went over the $100,000 plateau in lifetime earnings.

The $48,600 second Lady Suffolk division went to Wayne Harrington's KD Girl with a come from behind triumph in 2:00. Jeff Gregory piloted the Self Possessed lass to a one length score over Willow Run Hottie (George Brennan). Celebrity Sweedie (Brian Sears) was third. Trained by Greg Hoch, KD Girl has won four of 10 lifetime, with earnings of $66,925.
