The first day of spring produced heated battles in the second round of the Four Leaf Clover Series Saturday night at Meadowlands.
Alexie Mattosie stopped the teletimer in 1:49.1 after a tussle to the wire with Beeeyouuuuuu and Golden Receiver in the first of the $25,000 divisions for conditioned pacers.
Alexie Mattosie and driver George Brennan fired to the lead off the gate and were quickly engaged by Beeeyouuuuuu, who crossed over to take command in a :26.3 opening quarter. After spiraling to the half in :53.4, Alexie Mattosie popped out of the pocket entering the far turn and reached the leader's wheel as they hit the three-quarter marker in 1:21.4.
The pair matched strides through the lane, with Golden Receiver nipping at their heels, until Alexie Mattosie nudged ahead at the wire. A photo could not separate Beeeyouuuuuu and Golden Receiver for the runner-up spot.
Alexie Mattosie is now two-for-two in the Four Leaf Clover Series. He paid $4.80 as he posted his 13th win in 43 career starts. Anthony Montini trains the 4-year-old son of No Pan Intended-Dame Crombie for Donald Lindsey, Paul Kleinpaste, William Alempijevic and Dennis Mavrin.
Driver George Brennan was also at the lines behind the second Four Leaf Clover division winner, Lisagain, who coasted wire to wire in 1:50. Aided by an early miscue from Pacinello, Lisagain stole away from the pack in a soft :28 opening quarter and never looked back en route to a 4 1-4-length romp. Mysticism and Livefreeordiehard were second and third, respectively.
Lisagain improved his record to four wins in seven starts this season for trainer Erv Miller and owners Mystical Marker Farms and John Carver. The son of Dragon Again-Lisheen is a half-brother to 2006 and 2007 Older Pacer of the Year Lismara.
The $132,000 (est.) Four Leaf Clover Final is Saturday, March 27.
