On Friday night, July 7, the $425,000 Gran Premio Nazionale for three-year-old Italian-bred trotters was raced at the San Siro Racetrack in Milan, Italy. To most of the fans surprise a female offspring of sire Viking Kronos won. The winner, Giulia Grif is out of Savanna CR, who is out of the Ontario-foaled Hi Lass Lauxmont. Driven by Marco Smorgon, Giulia Grif won by two lengths ahead of Giuseppe Bi (Toss Out) and Grande Armee (Muscles Yankee). The winning time was a mile rate of 1:58.3f over the mile and five sixteenths distance. The filly race, the $175,000 Gran Premio Nazionale Filly, went to Galadriel Baba (Super Arnie) who won the mile event in a lifetime best of 1:57.3f.
