The Brian Pinske Memorial Award was developed by Maywood Park management who wanted to honor trainer Brian Pinske with an annual award to be presented at his former Illinois base at Maywood Park. Pinske, one of the brightest stars on the Illinois harness scene, passed away suddenly in November 2002.
Pinske was a major participant in the Illinois and North America stakes program and built a stable of well-over 100 horses that he housed at Maywood Park for the majority of the year. The award named in his honor is dedicated to those horsemen who succeed in open stake events in Illinois.

Points are given for races at Balmoral, Maywood, Hawthorne, Springfield and DuQuoin, and include the American Nationals, the World Trotting Derby, the Windy City, Cinderella, the Hanovers, the Galt, Abe Lincoln, Fairy Godmother, the Dygert, the Carey, Reviews and Hayes Memorials. As well, double points were awarded to stakes with purses of $100,000 or more. Points are awarded as follows: 50 for first, 25 for second, 12 for third, eight for fourth, and five for a fifth-place finish.
