Ted Wing

Ted Wing was one of the most talented driver-trainers to hail from New England, and was one of the first catch-drivers to emerge from the New England tracks, after having a successful career as an alpine ski champion.

Wing, a resident of Flanders, N.J., was the 1978 driving champion at the Meadowlands, and drove in over 1,000 races from 1977-1982 and from 1990-1997

Wing’s best year came in 1978 when he scored 309 victories from 1,774 starts, and posted seasonal earnings of $2,581,808. He sits 59th on the list of all-time leading dash winning drivers.

On August 17, 1998 Ted Wing scored his 5,000th career victory, aboard Pappy’s Folly at Yonkers Raceway.

Some have told me that you cannot compete against these kinds of drivers racing only a few times a week, but I told them I'd gladly take my chances

Today the 57-year-old Greenville, ME native still has impressive figures with 5,199 wins and $32,905,784 in lifetime earnings, even though he’s doesn’t carry the load of a busy catch driver these days.

“I have a herniated disc that was reactivated at the Meadowlands in 2005,” Wing said. “I couldn't drive nightly, every night, but I do well fresh. Some have told me that you cannot compete against these kinds of drivers racing only a few times a week, but I told them I'd gladly take my chances.”
