The $301,587 Cane Pace was captured by Total Truth and driver Ron Pierce in 1:51.3 at Freehold Raceway on Monday, September 4. The Cane Pace is the first jewel in the Pacing Triple Crown, with the second being the Little Brown Jug, to be raced on Sept. 21 at the Delaware County Fairgrounds in Ohio.
Total Truth last raced in the Adios and received a bye into the Cane Pace final based on seasonal earnings. The time was the fastest Cane Pace since the race moved to Freehold in 1998 and was one-fifth of a second off Riyadh’s stakes record set in 1993 at Yonkers. It was the first Cane Pace victory for George Teague Jr.
“He went pretty comfortable,” trainer George Teague Jr. said. “I wasn’t worried about the time off. He’s fresh; I just don’t want to overdo it. There’s still a lot of racing ahead.”
“He did it all on his own,” Pierce. “I just talked to him the whole way and called on him to go at the end of the mile. I didn’t let [Took Hanover] get close to me; I just kind of kept him at my wheel. George Teague deserves all the credit. He does all the work and I just kind of sit there.” $301,587 Cane Pace Final at Freehold Raceway Monday, September 4, 2006 PP Horse Driver 5 Total Truth Ron Pierce 8 Took Hanover John Campbell 1 Dave Panlone David Miller 2 Artstanding Geo Brennen 1:51.3
