Meadowlands Announces 2005 Winter Series

Eighteen three-week series and the first test of the year for three-year-old pacers, the $250,000 estimated Berry's Creek, will highlight the racing program in the winter of 2005 at the Meadowlands. (November 19-December 18, 2004)

Nominations are now being accepted for all 18 Winter Series and the Berry's Creek with a deadline of December 1. Eligibility for the Winter Series is based on wins and earnings
up to and including November 15, 2004. Ages are determined as of January 1, 2005.

The series cover nearly every age, gait, gender and class grouping, ranging from non-winners of two up to the free for allers in the Presidential and Su Mac Lad. The winner of the Su Mac Lad, which concludes on April 10, along with winners of the Cutler and Titan Cup, will receive an invitation to the 2005 Nat Ray in August.

"The Winter Series are always a popular aspect of our stakes program," said Director of Racing and Racing Secretary Tad Stockman. "Horsemen look forward to the assurance of racing opportunities for the three-weeks of each series and the chance to compete for a rich final. The series have been spaced out, however, to avoid conflicts and to provide plenty of opportunity for overnight racing, too."

When the Meadowlands opens its 2005 season on January 7, it will be with an overnight purse structure averaging $200,000 nightly.

"With the purse increases, we are expecting both the quantity and quality of the competition to be stronger," Stockman added.

The finals of some of the Winter Series have been packaged together for big weekend programs. The Presidential, Clyde Hirt and Complex Finals, each expected to reach $100,000, will all take place on Saturday, January 29. Winter Festival weekend features the Tender
Loving Care and Cape & Cutter Finals on Friday, February 25; the Junior Trendsetter, Aquarius and Exit 16W Finals on Saturday, February 26 and the Senior Trendsetter Final on Sunday, February 27.

The elite performers in the Winter Series may also be offered spots in the new super invitationals, which will be carded with purses of $80,000 each. The first peak at the budding superstars of the three-year-old pacing division is offered in the Berry's Creek, with eliminations on May 7 and a $250,000 estimated final on May 14. The Berry's Creek elimination winners will have the opportunity to select their post positions for the final, a new wrinkle in the conditions.

The Meadowlands' fall harness meet is November 19 through December 18, 2004. Harness racing will then resume on January 7 through August 6, 2005.
