Meadowlands Pace by the Numbers
July 11, 2007
1) Post 1 in the Pace History 30 starts 18 checks, 3 wins 5 seconds 5 thirds.
2) Joe Holloway is attempting-as is Val D'Or-to win the NJ Classic AND the Meadowlands Pace-SAME year-with two DIFFERENT horses. Fresh Deck, Always A Virgin
3) Jody Jamieson-with a win in the Pace-will have THREE million $ wins-all within a calendar year. 2006 Metro-Yankee Skyscaper, 2007-NA Cup Tell All. The last driver to have three million $ wins WITHIN a calendar year? Sears-all with Rocknroll Hanover-2004 Metro-2005 NA Cup/Pace
4) FOURTH Straight year that The Panderosa is represented in the Pace-from his first FOUR crops. The Panderosa won the 1999 Pace
5) FIVE of the last 12 Pace finals have gone to a down under trainer (Pelling-4-Harder-1) This year, Noel Daley, Mark Harder and Mike Vanderkemp all look to represent the down under set.
5) Only once in Pace history have the inside FIVE post positions gotten all FIVE checks. 1994-3-5-4-2-1 was the order of finish-Cams Card Shark-Historic-Magical Mike-Pacific Rocket and Expensive Scooter
6) Dave Miller is the only driver-along with Campbell-who's been in each of the last six editions of the Pace. Miller goes in his 7th in a row, John his 27th straight.
7) SEVEN Pace wins for Campbell, by SEVEN different sires, SEVEN years apart for John from win #1 (1982-Hilarion) to wins #2 in the Pace (1989-Dexter Nukes)
8) Dave Miller has the longest EVER streak of Pace drives without EVER hitting the board. EIGHT 8 0-0-0.($162,000) Remember too that included in there is a double millionaire-Whosurboy and a Horse Of The Year-No Pan Intended. The longest streak overall is 10-by Ron Waples-but this came AFTER he won in his first try with Ralph Hanover in 1983.
9) NINE drives before Cat Manzi won his first Pace last year.
10) TEN wins-Kenneth J is the ONLY one in the field in double digit wins. 10-17
11) The first time in ELEVEN editions of the Pace-NO sons of Western Hanover, Artsplace or Cams Card Shark (Their first crops debuted in 1997 1997, 1999) EVERY year since-one or two or all of them have been in the Pace final.
12) TWELVE Pace finals for Pierce, 8 different spots he's finished in. 10 years since he won this final-1997-with Dream Away-from the first crop of Artsplace.
13) THIRTEEN trainers have won the Meadowlands Pace in their debut. THIRTEEN Pace winners have had partial or full Canadian ownership.
18) EIGHTEENTH Pace drive for Mike Lachance-who owns 10 million $ wins, and 5 of those 10 have come with a horse he had NEVER before driven. EIGHTEEN times on the board in the Pace for Campbell 18-26
19) 19 YEARS between starts in the Pace is the all-time record. 1981-2000 George Berkner Knight Wind, Sam Gimignano. This is interesting because it was George who first set the track/world record in the Pace-doing so in the 1977 eliminations with a 1:54 scorcher with BGS Bunny in his elimination.
21) 21 checks in Pace history-Campbell-the all-time best. Oddly-the ONLY time he has gone two STRAIGHT years without a check have been the last two 9th, 7th. 21 Governors Cups-NOT ONCE has the Governors Cup winner come back at 3 and captured the Meadowlands Pace!!!! Sutter Hanover won it in 2006.
22) 22 YEARS since Bob Boni and Nihilator won the 1985 Meadowlands Pace. Bob's back as one of the owners of Always A Virgin.
23) This July 23, Buddy Gilmour turns 75. Buddy won the Meadowlands Pace twice in a three year period. 1984-On The Road Again-1986-Laughs
25) This July 25 would have been Stanley Dancers 80th birthday. Stanley competed in only one Meadowlands Pace elimination-the first year-not qualifying with Kawartha Eagle.
